1 Kings 19:1-4

Elijah Runs for His Life

19 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, including a detailed account of how he killed all the prophets with the sword. Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah with this warning,[a] “May the gods judge me severely[b] if by this time tomorrow I do not take your life as you did theirs!”[c]

Elijah was afraid,[d] so he got up and fled for his life to Beer Sheba in Judah. He left his servant there, while he went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He went and sat down under a shrub[e] and asked the Lord to take his life:[f] “I’ve had enough! Now, O Lord, take my life. After all, I’m no better than my ancestors.”[g]

1 Kings 19:5-7

He stretched out[a] and fell asleep under the shrub. Suddenly an angelic messenger[b] touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” He looked and right there by his head was a cake baking on hot coals and a jug of water. He ate and drank and then slept some more.[c] The angel of the Lord came back again, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, for otherwise you won’t be able to make the journey.”[d]

1 Kings 19:8-15

So he got up and ate and drank. That meal gave him the strength to travel forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

He went into a cave there and spent the night. Suddenly the Lord’s message came to him, “Why are you here, Elijah?” 10 He answered, “I have been absolutely loyal[a] to the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies,[b] even though the Israelites have abandoned the covenant they made with you,[c] torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left and now they want to take my life.”[d] 11 The Lord[e] said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord. Look, the Lord is ready to pass by.”

A very powerful wind went before the Lord, digging into the mountain and causing landslides,[f] but the Lord was not in the wind. After the windstorm there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake, there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a soft whisper.[g] 13 When Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his robe and went out and stood at the entrance to the cave. Suddenly[h] a voice asked him, “Why are you here, Elijah?” 14 He answered, “I have been absolutely loyal[i] to the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies,[j] even though the Israelites have abandoned the covenant they made with you, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left and now they want to take my life.”[k] 15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came and then head for the wilderness of Damascus. Go and anoint Hazael king over Syria.

Psalm 42

Book 2 (Psalms 42-72)

Psalm 42[a]

For the music director, a well-written song[b] by the Korahites.

42 As a deer[c] longs[d] for streams of water,
so I long[e] for you, O God!
I thirst[f] for God,
for the living God.
I say,[g] “When will I be able to go and appear in God’s presence?”[h]
I cannot eat; I weep day and night.[i]
All day long they say to me,[j] “Where is your God?”
I will remember and weep.[k]
For I was once walking along with the great throng to the temple of God,
shouting and giving thanks along with the crowd as we celebrated the holy festival.[l]
Why are you depressed,[m] O my soul?[n]
Why are you upset?[o]
Wait[p] for God!
For I will again give thanks
to my God for his saving intervention.[q]
I am depressed,[r]
so I will pray to you while in the region of the upper Jordan,[s]
from Hermon,[t] from Mount Mizar.[u]
One deep stream calls out to another[v] at the sound of your waterfalls;[w]
all your billows and waves overwhelm me.[x]
By day the Lord decrees his loyal love,[y]
and by night he gives me a song,[z]
a prayer[aa] to the God of my life.
I will pray[ab] to God, my high ridge:[ac]
“Why do you ignore[ad] me?
Why must I walk around mourning[ae]
because my enemies oppress me?”
10 My enemies’ taunts cut me to the bone,[af]
as they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”[ag]
11 Why are you depressed,[ah] O my soul?[ai]
Why are you upset?[aj]
Wait for God!
For I will again give thanks
to my God for his saving intervention.[ak]

Psalm 43

Psalm 43[a]

43 Vindicate me, O God!
Fight for me[b] against an ungodly nation.
Deliver me[c] from deceitful and evil men.[d]
For you are the God who shelters me.[e]
Why do you reject me?[f]
Why must I walk around[g] mourning[h]
because my enemies oppress me?
Reveal[i] your light[j] and your faithfulness.
They will lead me;[k]
they will escort[l] me back to your holy hill,[m]
and to the place where you live.[n]
Then I will go[o] to the altar of God,
to the God who gives me ecstatic joy,[p]
so that I may express my thanks to you,[q] O God, my God, with a harp.
Why are you depressed,[r] O my soul?[s]
Why are you upset?[t]
Wait for God!
For I will again give thanks
to my God for his saving intervention.[u]

Galatians 3:23-29

Sons of God Are Heirs of Promise

23 Now before faith[a] came we were held in custody under the law, being kept as prisoners[b] until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 Thus the law had become our guardian[c] until Christ, so that we could be declared righteous[d] by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.[e] 26 For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith.[f] 27 For all of you who[g] were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave[h] nor free, there is neither male nor female[i]—for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants,[j] heirs according to the promise.

Luke 8:26-39

Healing of a Demoniac

26 So[a] they sailed over to the region of the Gerasenes,[b] which is opposite[c] Galilee. 27 As[d] Jesus[e] stepped ashore,[f] a certain man from the town[g] met him who was possessed by demons.[h] For a long time this man[i] had worn no clothes and had not lived in a house, but among[j] the tombs. 28 When he saw[k] Jesus, he cried out, fell[l] down before him, and shouted with a loud voice, “Leave me alone,[m] Jesus, Son of the Most High[n] God! I beg you, do not torment[o] me!” 29 For Jesus[p] had started commanding[q] the evil[r] spirit to come out of the man. (For it had seized him many times, so[s] he would be bound with chains and shackles[t] and kept under guard. But[u] he would break the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted[v] places.)[w] 30 Jesus then[x] asked him, “What is your name?” He[y] said, “Legion,”[z] because many demons had entered him. 31 And they began to beg[aa] him not to order[ab] them to depart into the abyss.[ac] 32 Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,[ad] and the demonic spirits[ae] begged Jesus[af] to let them go into them. He gave them permission.[ag] 33 So[ah] the demons came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd of pigs[ai] rushed down the steep slope into the lake and drowned. 34 When[aj] the herdsmen saw what had happened, they ran off and spread the news[ak] in the town[al] and countryside. 35 So[am] the people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus. They[an] found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 36 Those[ao] who had seen it told them how the man who had been demon-possessed had been healed.[ap] 37 Then[aq] all the people of the Gerasenes[ar] and the surrounding region[as] asked Jesus[at] to leave them alone,[au] for they were seized with great fear.[av] So[aw] he got into the boat and left.[ax] 38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go[ay] with him, but Jesus[az] sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home,[ba] and declare[bb] what God has done for you.”[bc] So[bd] he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole town[be] what Jesus[bf] had done for him.
