124 “(A)Had it not been the Lord who was on our side,”
(B)Let Israel now say,
2 “Had it not been the Lord who was on our side
When men rose up against us,
3 Then they would have (C)swallowed us alive,
When their (D)anger was kindled against us;
4 Then the (E)waters would have engulfed us,
The stream would have [a]swept over our soul;
5 Then the (F)raging waters would have [b]swept over our soul.”
4 “To you, O men, I call,
And my voice is to the sons of men.
5 “O [a](A)naive ones, understand prudence;
And, O (B)fools, understand [b]wisdom.
6 “Listen, for I will speak (C)noble things;
And the opening of my lips will reveal (D)right things.
7 “For my (E)mouth will utter truth;
And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8 “All the utterances of my mouth are in righteousness;
There is nothing (F)crooked or perverted in them.
9 “They are all (G)straightforward to him who understands,
And right to those who (H)find knowledge.
10 “Take my (I)instruction and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choicest gold.
11 “For wisdom is (J)better than [c]jewels;
And (K)all desirable things cannot compare with her.
12 “I, wisdom, (L)dwell with prudence,
And I find (M)knowledge and discretion.
13 “The (N)fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
(O)Pride and arrogance and (P)the evil way
And the (Q)perverted mouth, I hate.
14 “(R)Counsel is mine and (S)sound wisdom;
I am understanding, (T)power is mine.
15 “By me (U)kings reign,
And rulers decree justice.
16 “By me princes rule, and nobles,
All who judge rightly.
17 “I (V)love those who love me;
And (W)those who diligently seek me will find me.
18 “(X)Riches and honor are with me,
Enduring (Y)wealth and righteousness.
19 “My fruit is (Z)better than gold, even pure gold,
And my yield better than (AA)choicest silver.
20 “I walk in the way of righteousness,
In the midst of the paths of justice,
21 To endow those who love me with wealth,
That I may (AB)fill their treasuries.
15 Therefore [a]be careful how you (A)walk, not (B)as unwise men but as wise, 16 [b](C)making the most of your time, because (D)the days are evil. 17 So then do not be foolish, but (E)understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And (F)do not get drunk with wine, [c]for that is (G)dissipation, but be (H)filled with the Spirit, 19 (I)speaking to [d]one another in (J)psalms and (K)hymns and spiritual (L)songs, (M)singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20 (N)always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to [e](O)God, even the Father;
