Psalm 29

Psalm 29[a]

A psalm of David.

29 Acknowledge the Lord, you heavenly beings,[b]
acknowledge the Lord’s majesty and power.[c]
Acknowledge the majesty of the Lord’s reputation.[d]
Worship the Lord in holy attire.[e]
The Lord’s shout is heard over the water;[f]
the majestic God thunders,[g]
the Lord appears over the surging water.[h]
The Lord’s shout is powerful,[i]
the Lord’s shout is majestic.[j]
The Lord’s shout breaks[k] the cedars,
the Lord shatters[l] the cedars of Lebanon.[m]
He makes them skip like a calf,
Lebanon and Sirion[n] like a young ox.[o]
The Lord’s shout strikes[p] with flaming fire.[q]
The Lord’s shout shakes[r] the wilderness,
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.[s]
The Lord’s shout bends[t] the large trees[u]
and strips[v] the leaves from the forests.[w]
Everyone in his temple says, “Majestic!”[x]
10 The Lord sits enthroned over the engulfing waters,[y]
the Lord sits enthroned[z] as the eternal king.
11 The Lord gives[aa] his people strength;[ab]
the Lord grants his people security.[ac]

Ezekiel 3:12-21

Ezekiel Before the Exiles

12 Then a wind lifted me up[a] and I heard a great rumbling sound behind me as the glory of the Lord rose from its place,[b] 13 and the sound of the living beings’ wings brushing against each other, and the sound of the wheels alongside them, a great rumbling sound. 14 A wind lifted me up and carried me away. I went bitterly,[c] my spirit full of fury, and the hand of the Lord rested powerfully[d] on me. 15 I came to the exiles at Tel Abib,[e] who lived by the Kebar River.[f] I sat dumbfounded among them there, where they were living, for seven days.[g]

16 At the end of seven days the Lord’s message came to me: 17 “Son of man, I have appointed you a watchman[h] for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you must give them a warning from me. 18 When I say to the wicked, ‘You will certainly die,’[i] and you do not warn him—you do not speak out to warn the wicked to turn from his wicked lifestyle so that he may live—that wicked person will die for his iniquity,[j] but I will hold you accountable for his death.[k] 19 But as for you, if you warn the wicked and he does not turn from his wicked deed and from his wicked lifestyle, he will die for his iniquity but you will have saved your own life.[l]

20 “When a righteous person turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I set an obstacle[m] before him, he will die. If you have not warned him, he will die for his sin. The righteous deeds he performed will not be considered, but I will hold you accountable for his death. 21 However, if you warn the righteous person not to sin, and he[n] does not sin, he will certainly live because he was warned, and you will have saved your own life.”

Luke 9:18-27

Peter’s Confession

18 Once[a] when Jesus[b] was praying[c] by himself, and his disciples were nearby, he asked them,[d] “Who do the crowds say that I am?”[e] 19 They[f] answered,[g] “John the Baptist; others say Elijah;[h] and still others that one of the prophets of long ago has risen.”[i] 20 Then[j] he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter[k] answered,[l] “The Christ[m] of God.” 21 But he forcefully commanded[n] them not to tell this to anyone,[o] 22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer[p] many things and be rejected by the elders,[q] chief priests, and experts in the law,[r] and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”[s]

A Call to Discipleship

23 Then[t] he said to them all,[u] “If anyone wants to become my follower,[v] he must deny[w] himself, take up his cross daily,[x] and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life[y] will lose it,[z] but whoever loses his life because of me[aa] will save it. 25 For what does it benefit a person[ab] if he gains the whole world but loses or forfeits himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed[ac] of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person[ad] when he comes in his glory and in the glory[ae] of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you most certainly,[af] there are some standing here who will not[ag] experience[ah] death before they see the kingdom of God.”[ai]
