Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
9 Because you have made the Lord—my refuge,(A)
the Most High—your dwelling place,(B)
10 no harm will come to you;
no plague will come near your tent.(C)
11 For He will give His angels orders concerning you,
to protect you in all your ways.(D)
12 They will support you with their hands
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.(E)
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the young lion and the serpent.(F)
6 1 But the Lord replied to Moses, “Now you are going to see what I will do to Pharaoh: he will let them go because of My strong hand; he will drive them out of his land because of My strong hand.”(A)
God Promises Freedom
2 Then God spoke to Moses, telling him, “I am Yahweh. 3 I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but I did not reveal My name Yahweh to them.(B) 4 I also established My covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land they lived in as foreigners.(C) 5 Furthermore, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are forcing to work as slaves, and I have remembered(D) My covenant.
6 “Therefore tell the Israelites: I am Yahweh, and I will deliver you from the forced labor of the Egyptians and free you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm(E) and great acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as My people,(F) and I will be your God. You will know(G) that I am Yahweh your God, who delivered you from the forced labor of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you to the land that I swore[a](H) to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you as a possession. I am Yahweh.” 9 Moses told this to the Israelites, but they did not listen(I) to him because of their broken spirit and hard labor.
10 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, 11 “Go and tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the Israelites go from his land.”
12 But Moses said in the Lord’s presence: “If the Israelites will not listen to me, then how will Pharaoh listen to me, since I am such a poor speaker?”[b](J) 13 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron and gave them commands concerning both the Israelites and Pharaoh king of Egypt to bring the Israelites out of the land of Egypt.
35 “This Moses, whom they rejected when they said, Who appointed you a ruler and a judge?[a]—this one God sent as a ruler and a redeemer by means of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.(A) 36 This man led them out and performed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt,(B) at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness 40 years.(C)
Israel’s Rebellion against God
37 “This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, God[b] will raise up for you a Prophet like me from among your brothers.(D)[c] 38 He is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness together with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors.(E) He received living oracles to give to us.(F) 39 Our ancestors were unwilling to obey him, but pushed him away, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.(G) 40 They told Aaron:
Make us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what’s happened to him.(H)[d]
41 They even made a calf in those days, offered sacrifice to the idol, and were celebrating what their hands had made.(I) 42 Then God turned away(J) and gave them up to worship(K) the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:
House of Israel, did you bring Me offerings and sacrifices
40 years in the wilderness?
