Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 71[a]
71 In you, O Lord, I have taken shelter.
Never let me be humiliated.
2 Vindicate me by rescuing me.[b]
Listen to me.[c] Deliver me.[d]
3 Be my protector and refuge,[e]
a stronghold where I can be safe.[f]
For you are my high ridge[g] and my stronghold.
4 My God, rescue me from the power[h] of the wicked,
from the hand of the cruel oppressor.
5 For you are my hope;
O Sovereign Lord, I have trusted in you since I was young.[i]
6 I have leaned on you since birth;[j]
you pulled me[k] from my mother’s womb.
I praise you continually.[l]
Josiah Institutes Religious Reforms
34 Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem. 2 He did what the Lord approved[a] and followed in his ancestor David’s footsteps;[b] he did not deviate to the right or the left.
3 In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his ancestor[c] David. In his twelfth year he began ridding[d] Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, Asherah poles, idols, and images. 4 He ordered the altars of the Baals to be torn down,[e] and broke the incense altars that were above them. He smashed the Asherah poles, idols, and images, crushed them, and sprinkled the dust over the tombs of those who had sacrificed to them. 5 He burned the bones of the pagan priests[f] on their altars; he purified Judah and Jerusalem. 6 In the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, as far as Naphtali, and in the ruins[g] around them, 7 he tore down the altars and Asherah poles, demolished the idols, and smashed all the incense altars throughout the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.
The Gentiles Receive the Holy Spirit
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on[a] all those who heard the message.[b] 45 The[c] circumcised believers[d] who had accompanied Peter were greatly astonished[e] that[f] the gift of the Holy Spirit[g] had been poured out[h] even on the Gentiles, 46 for they heard them speaking in tongues and praising[i] God. Then Peter said, 47 “No one can withhold the water for these people to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did,[j] can he?”[k] 48 So he gave orders to have them baptized[l] in the name of Jesus Christ.[m] Then they asked him to stay for several days.
