Psalm 29

God in the Thunderstorm

A psalm of David.

29 ·Praise [T Ascribe to] the Lord, you ·angels [L sons of God; C God’s council];
    ·Praise the Lord’s [T Ascribe to the Lord] glory and power.
·Praise the Lord for [T Ascribe to the Lord] the glory of his name;
    worship the Lord ·because he is holy [L in the splendor of his holiness].

The Lord’s voice [C thunder] is heard over the ·sea [L waters; C a symbol of chaos].
    The glorious God thunders;
    the Lord thunders over the ·ocean [L many/mighty waters].
The Lord’s voice is powerful;
    the Lord’s voice is ·majestic [splendid; awesome].
The Lord’s voice breaks the ·trees [L cedars];
    the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon [C the most famous cedar forests].
He makes the land of Lebanon dance like a calf
    and ·Mount Hermon [L Sirion] jump like a baby bull.
The Lord’s voice ·makes the lightning flash [strikes with flashes of lightning].
The Lord’s voice shakes the ·desert [wilderness];
    the Lord shakes the ·Desert [Wilderness] of Kadesh.
The Lord’s voice ·shakes the oaks [or makes the deer give birth]
    and strips the ·leaves off the trees [L forests bare].
In his Temple everyone says, “Glory!”

10 The Lord ·controls [L is enthroned over] the flood [C controls chaos].
    The Lord ·will be [L is enthroned as] King forever.
11 The Lord gives strength to his people;
    the Lord blesses his people with peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-15

There Is a Time for Everything

There is a ·time [season] for everything,
    and ·everything [every activity] ·on earth [L under heaven] has its ·special season [time].
There is a time to be born
    and a time to die.
There is a time to plant
    and a time to ·pull up plants [uproot what has been planted].
There is a time to kill
    and a time to heal.
There is a time to ·destroy [tear down]
    and a time to build.
There is a time to cry
    and a time to laugh.
There is a time to ·be sad [mourn]
    and a time to dance.
There is a time to throw away stones
    and a time to gather them.
There is a time to ·hug [embrace]
    and a time ·not to hug [to refrain from embracing].
There is a time to ·look for something [seek]
    and a time to ·stop looking for it [L give up as lost; or lose].
There is a time to keep things
    and a time to throw things away.
There is a time to tear apart
    and a time to sew together.
There is a time to be silent
    and a time to speak.
There is a time to love
    and a time to hate.
There is a time for war
    and a time for peace.

God Controls His World

·Do [L What do] people really ·gain anything [profit] from their ·work [toil; 1:3]? 10 I saw the ·hard work [task] God has given people to ·do [keep them occupied; 1:13]. 11 God has ·given them a desire to know the future [L placed eternity/an awareness of time/or ignorance in their hearts]. He ·does everything just right and on time [L makes everything appropriate/beautiful in its time], but people can never ·completely understand what he is doing [L discover/find the work that God does from beginning to end; C humans cannot discern the “right time”]. 12 So I ·realize [know] that ·the best thing [L there is nothing better] for them is to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live. 13 God wants all people to eat and drink and be happy in their ·work [toil], which are gifts from God [2:24–26; 3:22; 5:18–20; 8:15; 9:7–10; C the little pleasures are distractions from the meaningless world]. 14 I know that everything God does will continue forever. People cannot add anything to what God has done, and they cannot take anything away from it. God does it this way to make people ·respect [or be afraid of; 5:7; 7:18; 8:12, 13] him.

15 What happens now has happened in the past,
    and what will happen in the future has happened before.
God makes the same things happen again and again.

1 Corinthians 2:11-16

11 Who knows the thoughts that another person has? Only a person’s spirit that lives within him knows his thoughts. It is the same with God. No one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we did not receive the spirit of the world, but we received the Spirit that is from God so that we can know all that God has [freely] given us. 13 And we speak about these things, not with words taught us by human wisdom but with words taught us by the Spirit. And so we explain spiritual truths ·to spiritual people [or to those who have the Spirit; or with the Spirit’s words]. 14 A ·person who does not have the Spirit [or natural person] does not accept the ·truths [L things] that come from the Spirit of God. That person thinks they are foolish and cannot understand them, because they can only be ·judged to be true [discerned; assessed] by the Spirit. 15 The ·spiritual person [or person with the Spirit] is able to ·judge [discern; assess] all things, but no one can ·judge [discern; assess] him. ·The Scripture says [L For]:

16 “Who has known the mind of the Lord?
    Who has been able to ·teach [advise; counsel] him [Is. 40:13]?”

But we have the mind of Christ [C the Holy Spirit reveals God and his ways to us; Rom. 11:34].
