Version
Psalm 29

The Voice of the Lord in the Storm.

A Psalm of David.

29 (A)Ascribe to the Lord, O [a]sons of the mighty,
Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory [b]due to His name;
Worship the Lord (B)in [c]holy array.

The (C)voice of the Lord is upon the waters;
The God of glory (D)thunders,
The Lord is over [d](E)many waters.
The voice of the Lord is (F)powerful,
The voice of the Lord is majestic.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
Yes, the Lord breaks in pieces (G)the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon (H)skip like a calf,
And (I)Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the Lord hews out [e]flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord [f]shakes the wilderness;
The Lord shakes the wilderness of (J)Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord makes (K)the deer to calve
And strips the forests bare;
And (L)in His temple everything says, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sat as King at the (M)flood;
Yes, the Lord sits as (N)King forever.
11 [g]The Lord will give (O)strength to His people;
[h]The Lord will bless His people with (P)peace.

Ecclesiastes 2:1-11

The Futility of Pleasure and Possessions

I said [a]to myself, “Come now, I will test you with (A)pleasure. So [b]enjoy yourself.” And behold, it too was futility. (B)I said of laughter, “It is madness,” and of pleasure, “What does it accomplish?” I explored with my [c]mind how to (C)stimulate my body with wine while my [d]mind was guiding me wisely, and how to take hold of (D)folly, until I could see (E)what good there is for the sons of men [e]to do under heaven the few [f]years of their lives. I enlarged my works: I (F)built houses for myself, I planted (G)vineyards for myself; I made (H)gardens and (I)parks for myself and I planted in them all kinds of fruit trees; I made (J)ponds of water for myself from which to irrigate a forest of growing trees. I bought male and female slaves and I had [g](K)homeborn slaves. Also I possessed flocks and (L)herds larger than all who preceded me in Jerusalem. Also, I collected for myself silver and (M)gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I provided for myself (N)male and female singers and the pleasures of men—many concubines.

Then I became (O)great and increased more than all who preceded me in Jerusalem. My wisdom also stood by me. 10 (P)All that my eyes desired I did not refuse them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, for my heart was pleased because of all my labor and this was my (Q)reward for all my labor. 11 Thus I considered all my activities which my hands had done and the labor which I had [h]exerted, and behold all was [i](R)vanity and striving after wind and there was (S)no profit under the sun.

1 Corinthians 2:1-10

Paul’s Reliance upon the Spirit

And when I came to you, brethren, I (A)did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you (B)the [a]testimony of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except (C)Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. I was with you in (D)weakness and in (E)fear and in much trembling, and my [b]message and my preaching were (F)not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of (G)the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not [c]rest on the wisdom of men, but on (H)the power of God.

Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are (I)mature; a wisdom, however, not of (J)this age nor of the rulers of (K)this age, who are (L)passing away; but we speak God’s wisdom in a (M)mystery, the hidden wisdom which God (N)predestined before the (O)ages to our glory; the wisdom (P)which none of the rulers of (Q)this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified (R)the Lord of glory; but just as it is written,

(S)Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10 [d](T)For to us God revealed them (U)through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the (V)depths of God.
