Psalm 63

David wrote this psalm when he was in the Judah wilderness.

A morning song[a]

63 God, you are my God.
I want to be near to you.
I need you to give me life,
like a thirsty person in a dry desert.
As a person needs water to live,
that is how I need you.[b]
When I have gone into your temple,
I have seen what you are like.
I have seen your great power and your glory.
Your faithful love for me is better than life itself.
So I will speak out to praise you.
Yes, I will thank you for as long as I live.
I will lift up my hands and I will pray to you.
You make me very happy,
better than a feast of good food.
I will sing happy songs to praise you.
When I lie on my bed,
I think about you all through the night.
You are the one who keeps me safe,
like a bird protects its babies under its wings.
So I sing happy songs.
I keep very near to you
and your strong right hand keeps me safe.
My enemies are trying to kill me,
but I know that they themselves will die.
They will go down into the deep hole of death.
10 Soldiers will kill them with swords.
Wild dogs will eat their dead bodies.
11 But the king will sing songs to praise God.[c]
Everybody who promises to serve God
will speak aloud to praise him.
But everyone who tells lies
will not be able to say anything!

1 Samuel 17:55-18:5

55 Saul had watched David when he went out to fight the strong Philistine soldier. Saul said to Abner, the leader of his army, ‘Tell me Abner, who is that young man? Who is his father?’

Abner replied, ‘My king, I cannot tell you a lie. I do not know who he is.’ 56 The king said, ‘You must find out the name of that man's father.’

57 When David returned after he had killed Goliath, Abner took him to Saul. David was still holding Goliath's head in his hand.

58 Saul asked him, ‘Young man, who is your father?’ David answered, ‘I am the son of your servant Jesse, who lives in Bethlehem.’

18 David finished talking with Saul. After that, Saul's son Jonathan became a very good friend of David. Jonathan loved David as much as he loved his own life. Saul kept David with him from that day. He did not let David go home to his father's house. Jonathan made a special promise to be David's friend, because he loved David as much as he loved his own life. Jonathan took off his coat and he gave it to David. He also gave his armour to David, as well as his sword, his bow and his belt.

David did whatever Saul asked him to do. And he always did it well. So Saul made David an officer to lead his army. That made the soldiers happy, and it also pleased Saul's officers.

Revelation 11:15-19

The seventh trumpet

15 The seventh angel made a sound with his trumpet. Then there was the sound of loud voices in heaven. They shouted:

‘Our Lord God and his Messiah now have all authority!
The whole world has become their kingdom.
God will rule as King for ever!’

16 The 24 leaders were sitting on their thrones in front of God. Now they threw themselves down on their faces and they worshipped God. 17 They said:

‘We thank you, Lord God, because you have all authority!
You are alive now and you have always been alive.
You have great power and now you have begun to rule the whole world!
18 The nations of the world were very angry.
But now it is time for you to be angry with them.
Now you will judge all the people who have died.
You will give good things to your servants, the prophets,
and to all your people.
You will bless everyone who respects and obeys you,
whether they are important people or not.
But you will destroy all those people who destroy the earth.
The time has now come for all this to happen.’

19 Then the door of the temple in heaven became open. Inside it, I saw God's Covenant Box.[a] There was a great storm with bright lightning and the loud noise of thunder. There was an earthquake and strong rain with stones of ice fell from the sky.
