Chapter 7

The Oracle of Nathan. (A)After the king had taken up residence in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from his enemies on every side,(B) the king said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent!”(C) Nathan answered the king, “Whatever is in your heart, go and do, for the Lord is with you.”(D) But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: Go and tell David my servant, Thus says the Lord: Is it you who would build me a house to dwell in?(E) I have never dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up from Egypt to this day, but I have been going about in a tent or a tabernacle. As long as I have wandered about among the Israelites, did I ever say a word to any of the judges whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel: Why have you not built me a house of cedar?

Now then, speak thus to my servant David, Thus says the Lord of hosts:[a] I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to become ruler over my people Israel.(F) I was with you wherever you went, and I cut down all your enemies before you. And I will make your name like that of the greatest on earth.(G) 10 I will assign a place for my people Israel and I will plant them in it to dwell there; they will never again be disturbed, nor shall the wicked ever again oppress them, as they did at the beginning, 11 and from the day when I appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord also declares to you that the Lord will make a house for you:(H) 12 (I)when your days have been completed and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, sprung from your loins, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He it is[b] who shall build a house for my name, and I will establish his royal throne forever. 14 I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. If he does wrong, I will reprove him with a human rod and with human punishments;(J)

Psalm 89:20-37

III

20 Then you spoke in vision;(A)
    to your faithful ones you said:
“I have set a leader over the warriors;
    I have raised up a chosen one from the people.
21 I have chosen David, my servant;
    with my holy oil I have anointed him.
22 My hand will be with him;(B)
    my arm will make him strong.
23 No enemy shall outwit him,
    nor shall the wicked defeat him.
24 I will crush his foes before him,
    strike down those who hate him.
25 My faithfulness and mercy will be with him;
    through my name his horn will be exalted.
26 [a]I will set his hand upon the sea,
    his right hand upon the rivers.
27 He shall cry to me, ‘You are my father,(C)
    my God, the Rock of my salvation!’
28 I myself make him the firstborn,
    Most High[b] over the kings of the earth.
29 Forever I will maintain my mercy for him;(D)
    my covenant with him stands firm.
30 I will establish his dynasty forever,
    his throne as the days of the heavens.
31 If his descendants forsake my teaching,(E)
    do not follow my decrees,
32 If they fail to observe my statutes,
    do not keep my commandments,
33 I will punish their crime with a rod
    and their guilt with blows.
34 But I will not take my mercy from him,
    nor will I betray my bond of faithfulness.(F)
35 I will not violate my covenant;
    the promise of my lips I will not alter.(G)
36 By my holiness I swore once for all:(H)
    I will never be false to David.
37 [c]His dynasty will continue forever,(I)
    his throne, like the sun before me.

Ephesians 2:11-22

11 Therefore, remember that at one time you, Gentiles in the flesh, called the uncircumcision by those called the circumcision, which is done in the flesh by human hands, 12 were at that time without Christ, alienated from the community of Israel[a] and strangers to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world.(A) 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ.(B)

14 [b]For he is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh,(C) 15 abolishing the law with its commandments and legal claims, that he might create in himself one new person[c] in place of the two, thus establishing peace,(D) 16 and might reconcile both with God, in one body, through the cross, putting that enmity to death by it.(E) 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near,(F) 18 for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.(G)

19 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God,(H) 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,(I) with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone.[d] 21 Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord;(J) 22 in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.(K)

Mark 6:30-34

The Return of the Twelve. 30 The apostles[a] gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught.(A) 31 [b]He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat.(B) 32 So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.(C) 33 People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them.

The Feeding of the Five Thousand. 34 When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

Mark 6:53-56

The Healings at Gennesaret. 53 (A)After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret and tied up there. 54 As they were leaving the boat, people immediately recognized him. 55 They scurried about the surrounding country and began to bring in the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 Whatever villages or towns or countryside he entered, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak; and as many as touched it were healed.(B)
