Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
The King Trusts in Yahweh
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
21 O Yahweh, in Your strength the king will (A)be glad,
And in Your [a]salvation how greatly he will rejoice!
2 You have (B)given him his heart’s desire,
And You have not withheld the request of his lips. [b]Selah.
3 For You (C)meet him with the blessings of good things;
You set a (D)crown of fine gold on his head.
4 He asked life of You,
You (E)gave it to him,
(F)Length of days forever and ever.
5 His (G)glory is great through Your [c]salvation,
(H)Splendor and majesty You bestow upon him.
6 For You make him [d]most (I)blessed forever;
You make him joyful (J)with gladness in Your presence.
7 For the king (K)trusts in Yahweh,
And through the lovingkindness of the Most High (L)he will not be shaken.
8 Your hand will (M)find out all your enemies;
Your right hand will find out those who hate you.
9 You will make them (N)as a fiery oven in the time of your [e]anger;
Yahweh will (O)swallow them up in His wrath,
And (P)fire will devour them.
10 Their [f]offspring You will destroy from the earth,
And their (Q)seed from among the sons of men.
11 Though they [g](R)intended evil against You
And (S)devised a scheme,
They will not succeed.
12 For You will (T)make them turn their back;
You will [h]aim (U)with Your bowstrings at their faces.
13 Be exalted, O Yahweh, in Your strength;
We will (V)sing and praise Your might.
11 (A)Then Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees and craftsmen of wood and craftsmen of stone walls; and (B)they built a house for David. 12 Thus David knew that Yahweh had established him as king over Israel, and that He had lifted up his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
Children Born to David in Jerusalem
13 And (C)David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron; and more sons and daughters were born to David. 14 Now (D)these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet.
Patience and Perseverance
7 Therefore be patient, (A)brothers, (B)until the coming of the Lord. Behold, (C)the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the soil, being patient about it, until [a]it receives (D)the early and late rains. 8 (E)You too be patient; (F)strengthen your hearts, for (G)the coming of the Lord is (H)at hand. 9 (I)Do not groan, (J)brothers, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged. Behold, (K)the Judge is standing [b](L)right at the [c]door. 10 As an example, (M)brothers, of suffering and patience, take (N)the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we count those (O)blessed who persevere. You have heard of (P)the [d]perseverance of Job and have seen (Q)the [e]outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that (R)the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.
12 But above all, (S)my brothers, (T)do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let [f]your yes be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.
