Psalm 48

Psalm 48

A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised
    in the city of our God, in His holy mountain.

Beautiful in elevation,
    the joy of the whole earth,
is Mount Zion, on the sides of the north,
    the city of the great King.
God is known in her citadels
    as a refuge.

For the kings were assembled,
    they passed by together.
They saw it, and so they were astounded;
    they were alarmed, they hurried away.
Trembling seized them there,
    and pain like a woman in labor;
You break the ships of Tarshish
    with an east wind.

As we have heard,
    so have we seen
in the city of the Lord of Hosts,
    in the city of our God;
    God will establish it forever. Selah

We have thought of Your lovingkindness, O God,
    in the midst of Your temple.
10 According to Your name, O God,
    so is Your praise to the ends of the earth;
    Your right hand is full of righteousness.
11 May Mount Zion rejoice,
    may the daughters of Judah be glad,
    because of Your judgments.

12 Walk about Zion, and go round about her;
    count her towers;
13 mark well her bulwarks;
    consider her citadels;
    that you may tell it to the generation following.

14 For this God is our God forever and ever;
    He will be our guide even to death.

2 Samuel 3:1-12

The struggle between the house of Saul and the house of David endured, but David grew stronger as Saul became weaker.

Sons were born to David in Hebron:

his firstborn was Amnon, by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

and his second, Kileab, by Abigail the widow of Nabal, the Carmelite;

and the third, Absalom the son of Maakah the daughter of Talmai, the king of Geshur;

and the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith;

and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

and the sixth, Ithream, was born to Eglah, the wife of David.

These were born to David in Hebron.

Abner Defects to David

While there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner was strengthening himself in the house of Saul. Now Saul had a concubine whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah, and Ish-Bosheth said to Abner, “Why have you gone in to my father’s concubine?”

Abner became very angry over the words of Ish-Bosheth. He said, “Am I a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Each day I show loyalty to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends by not allowing you to fall into the hand of David. Yet today you are charging me with guilt concerning this woman. May God do so to Abner, and more also, for as the Lord has sworn to David, this I will do for him, 10 to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and to establish the throne of David over Israel and Judah, from Dan to Beersheba.” 11 And he could not offer a response to Abner, for fear of him.

12 So Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf saying, “To whom does the land belong? Make your covenant with me, and my hand will be with you to bring over all of Israel to you.”

2 Corinthians 10:7-11

Do you look at things from the outward appearance? If any man trusts that he is Christ’s, let him consider again that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s. For even if I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord has given us for edification and not for your destruction, I shall not be ashamed, lest I appear to frighten you by my letters. 10 “For his letters,” they say, “are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.” 11 Let such a person consider this: that as we are in word by letters when we are absent, we will also be in deed when we are present.
