Psalm 48

The City of Our God

A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

48 (A)Great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised,
In the (B)city of our God, His (C)holy mountain.
(D)Beautiful in elevation, (E)the joy of the whole earth,
Is Mount Zion in the far north,
The (F)city of the great King.
God, in her palaces,
Has made Himself known as a (G)stronghold.

For, behold, the (H)kings assembled themselves,
They passed by together.
They saw it, then they were astonished;
They were (I)dismayed, they [a]fled in alarm.
[b]Panic seized them there,
Anguish, as of (J)a woman in childbirth.
With the (K)east wind
You (L)break the (M)ships of Tarshish.
As we have heard, so have we seen
In the city of Yahweh of hosts, in the city of our God;
God will (N)establish her forever. [c]Selah.

We have thought on (O)Your lovingkindness, O God,
In the midst of Your temple.
10 As is Your (P)name, O God,
So is Your (Q)praise to the ends of the earth;
Your (R)right hand is full of righteousness.
11 Let Mount (S)Zion be glad,
Let the (T)daughters of Judah rejoice
Because of Your judgments.
12 Walk about Zion and go around her;
Count her (U)towers;
13 Consider her (V)ramparts;
Go through her palaces,
That you may (W)recount it to the next generation.
14 For this is God,
Our God forever and ever;
He will (X)guide us [d]over death.

2 Samuel 2:1-11

David Anointed King of Judah

Now it happened afterwards that (A)David asked of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I go up to one of the cities of Judah?” And Yahweh said to him, “Go up.” So David said, “Where shall I go up?” And He said, “(B)To Hebron.” So David went up there, and (C)his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. And (D)David brought up his men who were with him, each with his household; and they lived in the cities of Hebron. Then the men of Judah came and there (E)anointed David king over the house of Judah.

And they told David, saying, “It was (F)the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul.” And David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said to them, “(G)May you be blessed of Yahweh because you have [a]shown this lovingkindness with your lord, with Saul, and have buried him. So now, (H)may Yahweh [b]show lovingkindness and truth to you; and I also will [c]show this goodness to you, because you have done this thing. So now, let your hands be strong and be [d]valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

Ish-bosheth Made King over Israel

Now (I)Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, had taken [e]Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to (J)Mahanaim. And he made him king over (K)Gilead, over the (L)Ashurites, over (M)Jezreel, over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, even over all Israel. 10 Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he became king over Israel, and he was king for two years. The house of Judah, however, followed David. 11 (N)And the [f]time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

1 Corinthians 4:8-13

You are (A)already filled, you have already become rich, you have ruled without us—and how I wish that you had ruled indeed so that we also might rule with you. For, I think that God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men (B)condemned to death, because we (C)have become a spectacle to the world, and to angels, and to men. 10 We are (D)fools for the sake of Christ, but (E)you are prudent in Christ! (F)We are weak, but you are strong! You are glorious, but we are without honor! 11 To this present hour we (G)hunger and thirst, and are poorly clothed, and roughly treated, and homeless; 12 and we labor, (H)working with our own hands; when we are (I)reviled, we bless; when we are (J)persecuted, we endure; 13 when we are slandered, we try to plead; we have (K)become as the scum of the world, the grime of all things, even until now.
