Psalm 29

Psalm 29[a]

The Lord of Majesty Acclaimed as King of the World

A psalm of David.

I

Give to the Lord, you sons of God,[b]
    give to the Lord glory and might;
Give to the Lord the glory due his name.
    Bow down before the Lord’s holy splendor!(A)

II

The voice of the Lord[c] is over the waters;
    the God of glory thunders,
    the Lord, over the mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is power;
    the voice of the Lord is splendor.(B)
The voice of the Lord cracks the cedars;
    the Lord splinters the cedars of Lebanon,
Makes Lebanon leap like a calf,
    and Sirion[d] like a young bull.
The voice of the Lord strikes with fiery flame;
    the voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
    the Lord shakes the desert of Kadesh.
[e]The voice of the Lord makes the deer dance
    and strips the forests bare.
    All in his Temple say, “Glory!”

III

10 The Lord sits enthroned above the flood![f](C)
    The Lord reigns as king forever!
11 May the Lord give might to his people;[g]
    may the Lord bless his people with peace!(D)

Isaiah 1:1-4

I. Isaiah 1—39

A. Indictment of Israel and Judah

Chapter 1

[a]The vision which Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

Accusation and Appeal

[b]Hear, O heavens, and listen, O earth,
    for the Lord speaks:
Sons have I raised and reared,
    but they have rebelled against me!(A)
An ox knows its owner,
    and an ass,[c] its master’s manger;
But Israel does not know,
    my people has not understood.(B)
Ah![d] Sinful nation, people laden with wickedness,
    evil offspring, corrupt children!
They have forsaken the Lord,
    spurned the Holy One of Israel,
    apostatized,(C)

Isaiah 1:16-20

16     Wash yourselves clean!
Put away your misdeeds from before my eyes;
    cease doing evil;
17     learn to do good.
Make justice your aim: redress the wronged,
    hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow.(A)

18 Come now, let us set things right,[a]
    says the Lord:
Though your sins be like scarlet,
    they may become white as snow;
Though they be red like crimson,
    they may become white as wool.(B)
19 If you are willing, and obey,
    you shall eat the good things of the land;
20 But if you refuse and resist,
    you shall be eaten by the sword:
    for the mouth of the Lord has spoken!

Romans 8:1-8

Chapter 8

The Flesh and the Spirit.[a] Hence, now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed you from the law of sin and death.(A) For what the law, weakened by the flesh, was powerless to do, this God has done: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for the sake of sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,(B) so that the righteous decree of the law might be fulfilled in us, who live not according to the flesh but according to the spirit.(C) For those who live according to the flesh are concerned with the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit with the things of the spirit. The concern of the flesh is death, but the concern of the spirit is life and peace.(D) For the concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it does not submit to the law of God, nor can it;(E) and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.(F)
