Psalm 107:1-16

God takes care of his people[a]

107 Thank the Lord because he is good.
His faithful love for his people continues for ever.
Everyone that the Lord has rescued
    should tell others.
Tell them how he has rescued you
    from the enemy's power.
He brought his people from foreign countries.
He brought them together from the east and the west,
from the north, and from the south.[b]

Some of them travelled through the wilderness
on a road that went nowhere.
They did not find any city to live in.
They were hungry and thirsty.
They were very weak and nearly dead.
Because of their trouble,
they called to the Lord for help.
He rescued them from their troubles.
He led them along a straight road,
to arrive at a city where they could live.
So God's people should thank the Lord
    because of his faithful love.
They should thank him for the great things
    that he does for people.
He gives drink to people who are thirsty.
He gives plenty of good things to hungry people.

10 Some people sat in a completely dark place.
Iron chains held them as prisoners,
    and they were very sad.
11 They had refused to obey God's commands.
They did not accept the teaching of the Most High God.
12 Because of that, God caused them to become weak
    from very hard work.
When they fell down,
nobody would help them to stand up.
13 Because of their trouble,
they called to the Lord for help.
He rescued them from their troubles.
14 He took them out of the completely dark place.
He broke away the chains that held them.
15 So they should thank the Lord
    because of his faithful love.
They should thank him for the great things
    that he does for people.
16 He broke bronze gates into pieces
and he cut through iron bars.[c]

Isaiah 60:15-22

15 At one time, people kept away from you,
    and they hated you.
    Nobody travelled through you.
But now I will make you a great city,
so that people will be proud of you for ever.
Your people and their descendants will be very happy.
16 Other nations and their kings
will give you everything that you need.
They will be like mothers
who feed their babies with their milk.
Then you will know that I, the Lord,
    have made you safe.
You will know that I am your Redeemer,
    the Mighty One of Jacob.
17 I will bring you gold instead of bronze.
I will bring you silver instead of iron.
I will give you bronze to use, instead of wood.
I will give you iron instead of stones.
I will cause peace to be your city's leader.
    Righteousness will rule over you.
18 You will not hear the noise of violence in your land any more.
Inside its borders,
nobody will fight wars or destroy things.
You will call your city's walls ‘Salvation’,
and you will call your city's gates ‘Praise’.
19 You will no longer need the sun
to give you light in the day again.
You will not need the moon to shine at night.
Instead, the Lord will be the light
that shines on you for ever.
Yes, your God will be the light
    that brings you honour.
20 Your sun will never go down again
and your moon will never disappear.
That is because the Lord will be the light
that shines on you for ever.
Then your sad days will come to an end.
21 All your people will be righteous.
The land will belong to them for ever.
I myself will plant them in the ground
    like a young plant.
As they grow, they will show how great I am.
22 The least important person among you
    will become a great family.
The smallest person will become a large nation.
I am the Lord.
When the right time comes,
I will cause it to happen quickly!

John 8:12-20

Jesus is the light of the world

12 Jesus spoke to the people again. He said, ‘I am the light of the world.[a] Those people who become my disciples will never walk in the dark. No, they will have the light that gives life.’

13 The Pharisees began to argue with him. They said, ‘You are saying things about yourself. But there is nobody else to agree that these things are true.’

14 Jesus answered, ‘What I say is true. Even if I do speak about myself, my words are true. I know where I have come from. I also know where I will go. As for you, you do not know where I came from. You do not know where I will go. 15 You judge in the way that people think. I do not judge anyone. 16 But if I did judge anyone, I would decide correctly what is right. That is because I am not alone. The Father has sent me, and he is with me. 17 Your own Law says, “There must be two people to agree that something is true.”[b] 18 I speak what is true about myself. The Father, who sent me, also speaks what is true about me.’

19 Then they asked him, ‘So where is your Father?’ Jesus answered, ‘You do not know either me or my Father. If you really knew me, you would also know my Father.’ 20 Jesus said all these words while he taught in the yard of the temple. He was near the place where they kept the gifts of money. But nobody took hold of him, because it was not the right time for that yet.
