Version
Psalm 19

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

God teaches us about himself

19 The heavens show us how great God is.
The sky above shows his good work.
Each day speaks about God,
until the next day continues the story.
Every night tells us how great God is.
They do not use words to speak with.
    Nobody hears their voice.
But their message goes round all the earth.
All the world can understand what they say.

God has made a home for the sun in the sky.
Each morning, the sun comes out,
like a happy man who has just married.
It comes out,
like a strong man who wants to run a race.
The sun rises at one end of the heavens.
It travels in a big circle to the other end.
Nothing can hide from its heat.[a]

The law of the Lord is perfect.
    It makes us strong again.
We can trust what the Lord teaches us.
He helps ordinary people to be wise.
The Lord's rules are always right.
If we obey them, they make us really happy.
The Lord's commands are completely good.
They show us how to live in a good way.
It is right for us to respect the Lord.
    That will always help us.
The laws of the Lord are true.
    They are right and fair.
10 They are more valuable than gold,
    even the best gold.
They are sweeter than the best honey.
11 Your laws warn us to do what is right.
If we obey them, they are a great help to us.[b]

12 Nobody realizes every time they do something wrong.
Please forgive me for the sins that I do not know about.
13 Lord, stop me doing things that I know are wrong.
Do not let those sins rule my life.
Then I will not be guilty.
I will not have turned against you in a bad way.

14 Lord, I want to make you happy.
I want my words and my thoughts to please you.
You are my strong Rock
    and you are my Redeemer.[c]

Exodus 19:16-25

16 On the morning of the third day, there was thunder and lightning. A thick cloud was there over the mountain. The people heard the noise of a loud trumpet. They were so afraid that their bodies were shaking.

17 Then Moses led the people away from their tents to meet with God. They went and they stood at the edge of the mountain. 18 Smoke covered Sinai mountain because the Lord had come down on the mountain, like a fire. The smoke rose up from the mountain, like smoke from a great fire. The whole mountain shook very much. 19 The noise of the trumpet became louder and louder. Moses spoke to God and God answered him with a loud voice.

20 The Lord came down onto the top of Sinai mountain. Then the Lord told Moses that he must come up to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up the mountain. 21 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Go down to the people. Warn them that they must stay away from the mountain. They must not cross the line to try to see me, the Lord. If they do that, many of them will die. 22 Even the priests must make themselves clean before they come near to me. If they do not obey this command, I will punish them. I am the Lord.’

23 Moses said to the Lord, ‘The people cannot come up Sinai mountain. You warned us that we must make a line round the edge of the mountain. You said that we must make the mountain a special place.’

24 The Lord replied, ‘Now go back down. Then bring Aaron up with you. But the priests and the people must stay where they are. They must not try to come up here where I am. If they come across the line, I will punish them.’

25 So Moses went down to the people. He told them what the Lord had said.

Mark 9:2-8

Six days after that, Jesus asked Peter, James and John to go with him. Jesus led them up a high mountain, where they were alone together. Peter, James and John saw Jesus change in front of them. His clothes became very white; they were shining. They were a brighter white than anyone on earth could wash them. Then Elijah and Moses appeared in front of the three disciples. Elijah and Moses were talking with Jesus.[a][b]

So Peter said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, it is good that we are here. Please let us build three huts. One hut will be for you. One hut will be for Moses. And one hut will be for Elijah.’ Peter did not really know what to say. That was because the three disciples were very afraid.[c]

Then a cloud appeared and it covered them all. A voice spoke from the cloud and it said, ‘This is my Son, and I love him. Listen to him.’

At that moment, the three disciples looked around. They saw that nobody else was there now. Only Jesus was there with them.
