Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Circumcision, the Sign of the Covenant
17 Now it happened that when Abram was ninety-nine years old, (A)Yahweh appeared to Abram and said to him,
“I am [a]God (B)Almighty;
Walk before Me and be [b](C)blameless,
2 so that I may [c]confirm My (D)covenant between Me and you,
And that I may (E)multiply you exceedingly.”
3 Then Abram (F)fell on his face, and God spoke with him, saying,
4 “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you,
And you will be the father of a (G)multitude of nations.
5 And no longer shall your name be called [d]Abram,
But (H)your name shall be [e]Abraham;
For (I)I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.
6 And I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and (J)kings will go forth from you. 7 And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your seed after you throughout their generations for an (K)everlasting covenant, (L)to be God to you and (M)to your seed after you.
Sarah Will Bear Isaac
15 Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but [a]Sarah shall be her name. 16 And I will bless her, and indeed I will give you (A)a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; (B)kings of peoples will [b]come from her.”
23 (A)You who fear Yahweh, praise Him;
All you seed of Jacob, (B)glorify Him,
And (C)stand in awe of Him, all you seed of Israel.
24 For He has (D)not despised and He has not abhorred the affliction of the afflicted;
And He has not (E)hidden His face from him;
But (F)when he cried to Him for help, He heard.
25 Of You is (G)my praise in the great assembly;
I shall (H)pay my vows before those who fear Him.
26 The [a]afflicted will eat and (I)be satisfied;
Those who seek Him will (J)praise Yahweh.
May your (K)heart live forever!
27 All the (L)ends of the earth will remember and turn to Yahweh,
And all the (M)families of the nations will worship before [b]You.
28 For the (N)kingdom is Yahweh’s
And He (O)rules over the nations.
29 All the [c](P)prosperous of the earth will eat and worship,
All those who (Q)go down to the dust will bow before Him,
Even he who [d](R)cannot keep his soul alive.
30 (S)Their seed will serve Him;
It will be recounted about the Lord to (T)the coming generation.
31 They will come and (U)will declare His righteousness
To a people (V)who will be born, that He has done it.
13 For (A)the promise to Abraham or to his seed (B)that he would be heir of the world was not [a]through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For (C)if those who are [b]of the Law are heirs, faith has been made empty and the promise has been abolished; 15 for (D)the Law brings about wrath, but (E)where there is no law, there also is no trespass.
16 For this reason it is [c]by faith, in order that it may be according to (F)grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to (G)all the seed, not only to [d]those who are of the Law, but also to [e](H)those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is (I)the father of us all— 17 as it is written, “(J)A father of many nations have I made you”—in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, (K)who gives life to the dead and [f](L)calls into being (M)that which does not exist. 18 In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become (N)a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, “(O)So shall your seed be.” 19 And without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now (P)as good as dead since (Q)he was about a hundred years old, and (R)the deadness of Sarah’s womb; 20 yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, (S)giving glory to God, 21 and (T)being fully assured that (U)what God had promised, He was able also to do. 22 Therefore (V)it was also counted to him as righteousness. 23 Now (W)not for his sake only was it written that it was counted to him, 24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be counted, as those (X)who believe upon Him who (Y)raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 He who was (Z)delivered over on account of our transgressions, and was (AA)raised on account of our justification.
31 (A)And He began to teach them that (B)the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And He was stating the matter (C)openly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and *said, “Get behind Me, (D)Satan! For you are not setting your mind on [a]God’s interests, but man’s.”
Take Up Your Cross
34 And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to [b]come after Me, he must deny himself, and (E)take up his cross and follow Me. 35 For (F)whoever wishes to save his [c]life will lose it, but whoever loses his [d]life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? 37 For what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 For (G)whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, (H)the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He (I)comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
2 (A)And six days later, Jesus *took with Him (B)Peter and James and John, and *brought them up on a high mountain alone by themselves. And He was transfigured before them; 3 and (C)His garments were shining intensely white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them. 4 And Elijah appeared to them along with Moses and they were conversing with Jesus. 5 And Peter answered and *said to Jesus, “(D)Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; (E)let us make three [a]booths, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what to answer; for they became terrified. 7 Then a cloud [b]formed, overshadowing them, and (F)a voice [c]came out of the cloud, “(G)This is My beloved Son, [d]listen to Him!” 8 And all at once when they looked around, they saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone.
9 (H)And as they were coming down from the mountain, He (I)gave them orders not to recount to anyone what they had seen, [e]until the Son of Man rose from the dead.
