Psalm 46

The sons of Korah wrote this special song for the music leader.

The city of God[a]

46 God is a strong place for us,
where he will keep us safe.
He will always help us
    when troubles come.
So even when the earth shakes,
    we will not be afraid.
And when the mountains fall down
    into the deep sea,
we will still not be afraid.
If the sea makes dangerous waves,
so that even the mountains shake,
we will never be afraid.
Selah.
There is a river that runs into the city of God,
and it brings God's blessing to the people there.
That is the holy place
where the Most High God lives.
God is in that city.
    Nothing can ever destroy it.
When dawn comes, God will be there to help it.
Nations are shouting with anger!
    Kingdoms shake and fall.
God calls in a loud voice,
    and even the earth melts!
The Lord Almighty is there to help us.
The God of Jacob keeps us safe.
Selah.
Come and see the great things
    that the Lord has done.
He has brought terrible things to the earth!
All over the world, he causes wars to finish.
He destroys the soldiers' bows and spears.
He burns their shields in a fire.
10 He says, ‘Be still and quiet!
    Understand that I am God.
I rule as king over the nations.
All the world will say that I am great.’
11 The Lord Almighty is there to help us.
The God of Jacob keeps us safe.
Selah.

Genesis 12:1-9

Abram leaves Haran

12 The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your country and the people of your father's family. Go to the land that I will show you.[a]

I will cause your descendants to become a great nation. I will bless you. Everyone will know your name. You will bring my blessing to other people. I will bless those people who bless you. But I will curse anyone who insults you. Through you, I will bless all the families of people on the earth.’[b]

Abram did what the Lord had told him. He left Haran. Abram was 75 years old when he left Haran. Lot went with him. Abram took his wife Sarai, and his nephew Lot. He took everything that belonged to them. He also took the people that worked for them in Haran. They all left to go to the land of Canaan.

When they arrived in Canaan, Abram walked through the land. He went as far as Shechem, to the special oak tree of Moreh. At that time, Canaanites lived in this land. The Lord appeared to Abram there. He said, ‘I will give this land to your descendants.’ So Abram built an altar in that place to worship the Lord.[c] He did that because the Lord had appeared to him.

Then Abram left Shechem. He went to the hills that are on the east of Bethel. He put up his tent in that place. Bethel was towards the west, and Ai was towards the east. Abram also built an altar there to worship the Lord.

Then Abram took his tent and he left that place. He continued to travel towards the Negev.[d]

1 Corinthians 7:17-24

17 But each of you should continue to live in the way that God has chosen for you. Remain as you were at the time when God called you to come to him. I teach that rule to people in all the churches. 18 Some of you are Jews, so people circumcised you. That happened before you believed in Christ. So do not try to change it. Some of you are not Jews. Nobody circumcised you. So continue like that. Do not ask anyone to circumcise you. 19 It is not important whether someone has circumcised you or not. The important thing is this: Obey what God says.

20 Each of you should continue as you were when God called you to come to him. 21 You may have been a slave when God called you. That does not matter. But if you have the chance to become a free person, accept it. 22 The Lord may call a slave to come to him. Then, that slave has become free, because he belongs to the Lord. In the same way, when God calls a free person to belong to Christ, he becomes Christ's slave. 23 God bought you for himself. He paid the price for you. So do not let anyone else make you their slave. 24 My Christian friends, each of you should continue as you were when God first called you to come to him.[a] Remember that you serve God.
