Psalm 110

David wrote this psalm.

The Lord's great King[a]

110 The Lord God said to my Lord,[b]
‘Sit at my right side[c] until I win against your enemies.
Then you will be able to put your feet on them.’
The Lord will give you great authority,
    as you rule from Zion.[d]
You will rule over all your enemies
    that are round you.
When you go to fight your enemies,
your people will be happy to fight beside you.
As the sun rises on the day of battle,
your young men will be there,
    on the hills round Zion.[e]
The Lord has made a strong promise.
    He will not change it.
He has promised, ‘You will be a priest for ever,
in the same way that Melchizedek was my priest.’[f]
The Lord is standing at your right side.
When he becomes angry,
    he will knock down kings!
He will punish the nations,
so that dead bodies cover the ground.
He will destroy kings everywhere on the earth.
He will drink from a stream at the side of the road.
With new strength, he will lift up his head.

Proverbs 1:20-33

Wisdom warns foolish people

20 Listen! Wisdom is like a woman who shouts in the streets. She speaks loudly in the market places. 21 She shouts above the noise in the city's streets. She calls aloud at its gates. This is what she says:

22 ‘Listen to me!
Will you silly people continue to be so silly?
You people who laugh at God, will you always be like that?
Will fools always refuse to learn anything?
23 Listen to me as I warn you of danger!
Then I will let you know my thoughts.
I will let you hear my message.
24 I called out to you, but you refused to listen.
I reached out to you, but you turned your backs to me.
25 You would not accept my teaching.
When I warned you, you did nothing.
26 So, when trouble comes to you, I will laugh.
I will laugh at you when you are afraid.
27 Fear may hit you like a strong wind.
Trouble may knock you down, like a storm.
Your problems may make you very afraid.
But I will laugh at you.
28 Foolish people will call to me for help, but I will not answer.
They will look for me everywhere, but they will not find me.
29 They have refused to learn what is right.
They have refused to respect the Lord.
30 They have not agreed to my advice.
When I warned them, they turned away.
31 So now they will receive the trouble that they deserve.
Their own wicked ideas will make them sick.
32 Silly people have turned away from me, and that will kill them.
Fools like an easy life, and that will destroy them.
33 But whoever listens to me, Wisdom, will live safely.
That person will have peace in his mind.
He will not be afraid of trouble.’

James 4:1-10

Do not turn away from God

You fight and quarrel among yourselves. Do you know why that happens? It is because of the troubles in your thoughts. You want to do bad things that you think will make you happy. You want to have something for yourself, but you do not get what you want. You even kill other people. You try to take things that are not yours. But you cannot get them. So you fight and you quarrel with each other. But you do not have these things because you do not ask God for them. Even when you do ask God, you do not receive anything. That is because you ask for the wrong reason. You just want to use these things to make yourselves happy.

You are turning away from God, like a woman who is not faithful to her husband. You choose to be friends with people who are against God. So you yourselves become enemies of God. You should know that! The Bible says, ‘God has caused his Spirit to live in us. He wants very much to keep us for himself.’ Do you think that is not true? But God will be very kind to us and he will help us. That is why the Bible says, ‘God is against those people who think that they are important. But he is kind to people who do not feel important.’ So obey God's authority. Be strong against the Devil and he will run away from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Be clean in the way that you live. Stop doing wrong things. Make your minds clean. You cannot love sin and love God at the same time. Be sorry about your sins and weep. Stop laughing and instead be sad. Do not be happy but be very upset.

10 Be humble in front of the Lord God. Then he will lift you up to a good place.
