Psalm 96

Praise for the Lord’s Glory

96 Sing to the Lord a new song [C celebrating victory; 33:3; 40:3; 98:1; 144:9; 149:1; Is. 42:10; Rev. 5:9; 14:3];
sing to the Lord, all the earth.

Sing to the Lord and ·praise [bless] his name;
    every day ·tell [announce the good news] ·how he saves us [L of his salvation/victory].
Tell the nations of his glory [C his manifest presence];
    tell all peoples the ·miracles [wonderful acts] he does,

because the Lord is great; he should be praised ·at all times [or with vigor].
    He ·should be honored [is awesome; should be feared] more than all the gods,
because all the gods of the nations are ·only idols [or worthless],
    but the Lord made the heavens [Gen. 1].
The Lord has ·glory [splendor] and majesty;
    he has power and beauty in his ·Temple [sanctuary; L Holy Place].

·Praise [L Ascribe to] the Lord, all ·nations on earth [L families of peoples];
    ·praise the Lord’s [L ascribe to the Lord] glory and power.
·Praise the glory of the Lord’s [L Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his] name.
    Bring an ·offering [grain/gift/tribute sacrifice; Lev. 2:1] and come into his Temple courtyards.
·Worship [Bow down to] the Lord ·because he is holy [L in the splendor of his holiness].
    Tremble before him, everyone on earth.
10 Tell the nations, “The Lord ·is king [reigns; 47:2; 93:1; 97:1; 98:6; 99:1; Rev. 19:6].”
    The earth is ·set [established], and it cannot be moved.
    He will judge the people fairly.
11 Let the ·skies [heavens] rejoice and the earth be glad;
    let the sea and everything in it ·shout [thunder; roar].
12 Let the fields and everything in them rejoice.
Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy
13     before the Lord, because he is coming.
    He is coming to judge the world;
he will judge the world with ·fairness [righteousness]
    and the peoples with ·truth [faithfulness; 98:9].

Zephaniah 3:8-13

Just ·wait [be patient],” says the Lord.
    “Someday I will stand up ·as a witness [to testify; or to plunder].
I have decided that I will gather nations
    and assemble kingdoms.
I will pour out my ·anger [wrath; indignation] on them,
    all my ·strong [fierce; burning] anger.
My anger will be like fire
    that will ·burn up [consume; devour] the whole world.

A New Day for God’s People

“Then I will ·give [restore to] the ·people of all nations [L nations] pure ·speech [L lips; C pure because they worship God instead of idols]
    so that all of them will ·speak [call on] the name of the Lord
    and worship me ·together [as one; side-by-side].
10 People will come from ·where the Nile River begins [L the rivers of Cush/Ethiopia];
    my worshipers, ·my scattered people [L the daughter of my dispersed ones] will come with ·gifts [offerings] for me.
11 ·Then [L On that day] Jerusalem will not be ashamed
    of the ·wrongs [rebellious deeds] done against me,
because I will remove from this city
    those who ·like to brag [arrogantly boast];
there will never be any more ·proud people [haughty]
    on my holy ·mountain in Jerusalem [L mountain; hill; C Zion, the location of the Temple].
12 But I will leave in ·the city [L your midst]
    the humble and ·those who are not proud [meek; lowly],
    and they will ·trust [or find refuge] in the [L name of the] Lord.
13 ·Those who are left alive in [L The remnant of] Israel won’t do wrong or tell lies;
    ·they won’t trick people with their words [No deceitful tongue will be found in their mouth].
They will ·eat [or graze; feed their flocks] and lie down
    with no one to make them afraid.”

Romans 10:5-13

[L For] Moses writes about ·being made right [the righteousness attained] by following the law. He says, “A person who ·obeys [L does] these things will live ·because of [or by means of] them [Lev. 18:5].” But ·this is what the Scripture says about being made right through faith [L the righteousness by faith says; C righteousness is personified as speaking]: “Don’t say ·to yourself [L in your heart; Deut. 9:4], ‘Who will ·go up [ascend] into heaven [Deut. 30:12]?’” (That means, “Who will go up to heaven and bring Christ down to earth [C a reference to the Incarnation, Christ coming to earth as a human being]?”) “And do not say, ‘Who will go down into the ·world below [or depths; or place of the dead; L abyss; Deut. 30:13; Ps. 107:26]?’” (That means, “Who will go down and bring Christ up from the dead?”) [C Such impossible tasks are not needed for our salvation, since Christ already did them for us.] ·This is what the Scripture says [L But what does it say?]: “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart [Deut. 30:14; C God’s salvation has been brought near through Christ and is received by faith].” That is the ·teaching [message; word] of faith that we ·are telling [preach; proclaim]. If you ·declare [confess] with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and if you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you will be saved. 10 [L For] We believe with our hearts, and so we ·are made right with God [are justified; receive righteousness]. And we ·declare [confess] with our mouths, ·and so we are saved [leading to salvation]. 11 As the Scripture says, “Anyone who ·trusts [believes] in him will never be ·disappointed [or put to shame; Is. 28:16].” 12 ·That Scripture says “anyone” because [L For] there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles. [L For; Because] The same Lord is the Lord of all and gives ·many blessings [generously; (spiritual) riches] to all who trust in him, 13 as the Scripture says, “Anyone who calls on the Lord will be saved [Joel 2:32].”
