Isaiah 40:1-11

God's promises to his people

40 Your God says, ‘Comfort my people.
    Yes, comfort them.
Speak kindly to the people in Jerusalem.
Tell them that their time of trouble has now finished.
Their punishment has been enough.
The Lord has made them pay for their sins.
He has made them pay twice.’

Somebody's voice is shouting,

‘Prepare a way in the wilderness for the Lord.
Make a straight road in the desert for our God.
Raise up every valley,
and bring down every mountain and hill.
The rough ground and the ground that has rocks
    will become flat.
Then the great glory of the Lord will appear!
All people will see it at the same time.
The Lord himself has promised this.’

A voice is saying, ‘Shout!’
But I say, ‘What should I shout?’
‘Shout that all people are like grass.
Their promises are like the flowers in a field.
Grass quickly dies,
and flowers fall to the ground.
The Lord causes this to happen,
when he sends a wind to blow on them.
It is true. People are like grass.
Grass quickly dies,
and flowers fall to the ground.
But God's promise will be true for ever.’

Zion, you have good news to tell to people!
So go up onto a high mountain.
Yes, Jerusalem, shout the good news!
Shout aloud, and do not be afraid.
Say to the towns in Judah, ‘Here is your God!’
10 Look! The Almighty Lord is coming with power.
He will use his great strength to rule the people.
Look again! He is bringing his gifts with him.
He brings the prize that he has won in battle.
11 He takes care of his people,
like a shepherd who takes care of his sheep.[a]
He picks up the young lambs
and he carries them near to his heart.
He carefully leads the mother sheep that have lambs.

Psalm 85:1-2

The sons of Korah wrote this psalm for the music leader.

A prayer for peace[a]

85 Lord, you have blessed your land.
You have made Jacob's descendants strong again.[b]
You forgave your people's sins.
    You took away their guilt.
Selah

Psalm 85:8-13

Now I will listen to what the Lord God says.
He will give peace to his people,
    to those who serve him.
But they must not turn back
    to do foolish things again.
Yes, God will soon rescue his people who serve him.
Then we will see his glory again in our land.
10 God will be faithful to us
and he will love us with his faithful love.
His justice and his peace will join together,
    like dear friends.
11 Faithful truth will grow like a plant in the ground.
Justice will look down from the sky above.[a]
12 Yes! The Lord will bless us with many good things.
Plenty of food will grow in our land.
13 Justice will go before our God,
and it will make a way for him to walk on.

2 Peter 3:8-15

My friends, here is one thing that you must remember. In the Lord God's mind, one day and 1,000 years are the same. For him, 1,000 years is like a single day. The Lord is not being slow to do what he has promised to do. Some people may think that he is being slow to do it. But he is being patient with you. He does not want to destroy anyone. He wants all people to turn away from the wrong things that they do.

10 The great day of the Lord will suddenly happen. That will surprise people, like when someone comes to rob them. There will be a very loud noise in the sky. The whole sky will go away. Fire will burn the whole universe and it will destroy everything. The earth and everything that people have made will then become clear.[a]

11 Certainly, God will destroy everything in this way one day. So think about how you should live now. You should be the kind of people that God is happy about. You should show that you belong to God. 12 Yes, you should continue to obey God while you are waiting for Christ to return. God has chosen that day. Try to live in a way that will make that day come soon. On that day, fire will burn the whole sky. The sky will no longer be there. Heat will destroy the universe. 13 But God has promised to make a new sky and a new earth. That is what we are waiting for. That will be a home for everything that is good and right.[b]

Peter finishes his letter

14 So, my friends, live in a good way, because you are waiting for these things to happen. Try very much to do what makes God happy. Then, when you meet God, he will see that you are clean. He will see that there is no trouble in your minds. 15 Remember that our Lord wants to save people from their sins. That is why he is now waiting patiently for people to turn to him before he will return. Paul has also written to you about these things. He is our friend that we love like a brother. God helped him to understand these things.

Mark 1:1-8

The start of the good news

This is the start of the good news about Jesus Christ. He is the Son of God. The prophet Isaiah wrote this message from God in his book:[a]

‘Listen! I will send someone to prepare a way for you.
He will tell people my message.
His voice will shout in the wilderness:
“The Lord will come soon, so prepare a way for him.
Make the paths straight for him.” ’[b]

So John went to a place in the wilderness. He baptized people and he spoke a message from God.[c] He said to people, ‘You have done many wrong things. You must turn away from them and change how you live. Then God will forgive you and I will baptize you.’

Many people who lived in Jerusalem and in the country of Judea went to listen to John.[d] The people told God about all the wrong things that they had done. Then John baptized them in the Jordan River. John wore clothes made from the hair of a camel. He also wore a belt made from leather. His usual food was locusts and honey from the wilderness.

John said to the people, ‘Another person will come soon. He is much greater than I am. I am not good enough even to undo his shoes for him. I have baptized you with water. But this man will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’
