Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 80
A Prayer for Restoration
For the choir director: according to “The Lilies.”(A) A testimony of Asaph.(B) A psalm.
1 Listen, Shepherd of Israel,
who leads Joseph like a flock;(C)
you who sit enthroned between the cherubim,(D)
shine(E) 2 on Ephraim,
Benjamin, and Manasseh.(F)
Rally your power and come to save us.(G)
3 Restore us, God;
make your face shine on us,(H)
so that we may be saved.(I)
4 Lord God of Armies,
how long will you be angry
with your people’s prayers?(J)
5 You fed them the bread of tears
and gave them a full measure[a]
of tears to drink.(K)
6 You put us at odds with our neighbors;
our enemies mock us.(L)
7 Restore us, God of Armies;
make your face shine on us, so that we may be saved.(M)
God’s People Cleansed
13 “On that day a fountain(A) will be opened for the house of David and for the residents of Jerusalem, to wash away sin and impurity.(B) 2 On that day”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies—“I will remove the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered.(C) I will banish the prophets[a] and the unclean spirit from the land. 3 If a man still prophesies, his father and his mother who bore him will say to him, ‘You cannot remain alive because you have spoken a lie in the name of the Lord.’ When he prophesies, his father and his mother who bore him will pierce him through.(D) 4 On that day every prophet will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies; they will not put on a hairy cloak(E) in order to deceive. 5 He will say, ‘I am not a prophet; I work the land, for a man purchased[b] me as a servant since my youth.’(F) 6 If someone asks him, ‘What are these wounds(G) on your chest?’[c]—then he will answer, ‘I received the wounds in the house of my friends.’
7 Sword, awake against my shepherd,
against the man who is my associate—
this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies.
Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered;(H)
I will turn my hand against the little ones.
8 In the whole land—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
two-thirds[d] will be cut off and die,
but a third will be left in it.
9 I will put this third through the fire;
I will refine them as silver is refined
and test them as gold is tested.(I)
They will call on my name,
and I will answer them.(J)
I will say, ‘They are my people,’
and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.’”(K)
The Proclamation of Three Angels
6 Then I saw another angel(A) flying high overhead,(B) with the eternal gospel to announce to the inhabitants of the earth—to every nation, tribe, language, and people.(C) 7 He spoke with a loud voice:(D) “Fear God(E) and give him glory,(F) because the hour of his judgment has come.(G) Worship the one who made heaven and earth,(H) the sea and the springs of water.”
8 And another, a second angel, followed, saying, “It has fallen, Babylon the Great(I) has fallen.[a] She made all the nations drink the wine of her sexual immorality,[b] which brings wrath.”(J)
9 And another, a third angel, followed them and spoke with a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he will also drink the wine of God’s wrath, which is poured full strength into the cup of his anger.(K) He will be tormented with fire and sulfur(L) in the sight of the holy angels and in the sight of the Lamb, 11 and the smoke of their torment will go up forever and ever.(M) There is no rest[c](N) day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or anyone who receives the mark(O) of its name. 12 This calls for endurance from the saints,(P) who keep God’s commands and their faith in Jesus.”[d]
13 Then I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.”(Q)
“Yes,” says the Spirit, “so they will rest from their labors, since their works follow them.”
