Psalm 100

This is a psalm to say ‘thank you’.

Thank you, God![a]

100 Everyone on earth,
    shout and praise the Lord!
Worship the Lord and be happy!
Come near to him with songs of joy.
Understand that the Lord is God.
He made us and we are his people.
He takes care of us,
like a shepherd with his sheep.
Thank him as you go through the gates into his temple.
Praise him as you stand in his temple yards.[b]
Thank him and praise him
    as he deserves!
Yes, the Lord is good.
He always loves us as his people.
He always does what he has promised
to us and to our descendants for ever.

Isaiah 40:1-11

God's promises to his people

40 Your God says, ‘Comfort my people.
    Yes, comfort them.
Speak kindly to the people in Jerusalem.
Tell them that their time of trouble has now finished.
Their punishment has been enough.
The Lord has made them pay for their sins.
He has made them pay twice.’

Somebody's voice is shouting,

‘Prepare a way in the wilderness for the Lord.
Make a straight road in the desert for our God.
Raise up every valley,
and bring down every mountain and hill.
The rough ground and the ground that has rocks
    will become flat.
Then the great glory of the Lord will appear!
All people will see it at the same time.
The Lord himself has promised this.’

A voice is saying, ‘Shout!’
But I say, ‘What should I shout?’
‘Shout that all people are like grass.
Their promises are like the flowers in a field.
Grass quickly dies,
and flowers fall to the ground.
The Lord causes this to happen,
when he sends a wind to blow on them.
It is true. People are like grass.
Grass quickly dies,
and flowers fall to the ground.
But God's promise will be true for ever.’

Zion, you have good news to tell to people!
So go up onto a high mountain.
Yes, Jerusalem, shout the good news!
Shout aloud, and do not be afraid.
Say to the towns in Judah, ‘Here is your God!’
10 Look! The Almighty Lord is coming with power.
He will use his great strength to rule the people.
Look again! He is bringing his gifts with him.
He brings the prize that he has won in battle.
11 He takes care of his people,
like a shepherd who takes care of his sheep.[a]
He picks up the young lambs
and he carries them near to his heart.
He carefully leads the mother sheep that have lambs.

Revelation 22:1-9

The river and the tree that give life

22 Then the angel showed me a river. It had water that gives true life to people. The water shone like clean glass. The river of water started from the throne where God and the Lamb sit to rule. It ran from the throne along the middle of the city's biggest street. I saw a tree that was growing on each side of the river. It is the tree that gives people true life. It has 12 different kinds of fruit, a new fruit every month. The tree's leaves are like medicine. They make people of every nation well again.

Nothing that is in the city will be under a curse. The throne where God and the Lamb sit to rule will be in the city. God's servants will worship him there. They will see his face. His name will be on the front of their heads. There will be no more night, so nobody will need a lamp to make light. They will not need light from the sun, because the Lord God will shine on them. They will rule as kings for ever.

The final message

Then the angel said to me, ‘All these words are true and everyone should believe them. The Lord God uses his prophets to speak his messages. He has sent his angel to speak to his servants. The angel will now show them what must happen soon.’

Jesus says, ‘Listen! I will come soon.[a] God will bless everyone who obeys the words of the prophecy that is in this book.’

John finishes his book

I am John. I myself heard these things and I saw them. When I had heard them and I had seen them, I bent down low at the angel's feet. I wanted to worship him because he had shown these things to me. But the angel said to me, ‘You must not do that! I am only a servant of God, the same as you are. I serve God like all God's prophets, who are believers like you. I serve God like everyone who obeys God's message that is written in this book. God is the one that you must worship!’
