Exodus 32:1-14

The Gold Calf

32 When the people saw that Moses delayed in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said to him, “Come, make gods[a] for us who will go before us because this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!” (A)

Aaron replied to them, “Take off the gold rings(B) that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters and bring them to me.” So all the people took off the gold rings that were on their ears and brought them to Aaron. He took the gold from them, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it into an image of a calf.

Then they said, “Israel, these are your gods,[b] who brought you up from the land of Egypt!” (C)

When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of it and made an announcement: “There will be a festival(D) to the Lord tomorrow.” Early the next morning they arose, offered burnt offerings, and presented fellowship offerings. The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to party.(E)

The Lord spoke to Moses: “Go down at once! For your people you brought up from the land of Egypt have acted corruptly.(F) They have quickly turned from the way I commanded them; they have made for themselves an image of a calf. They have bowed down to it, sacrificed to it, and said, ‘Israel, these are your gods, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.’”(G) The Lord also said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and they are indeed a stiff-necked(H) people. 10 Now leave me alone, so that my anger can burn against them and I can destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”(I)

11 But Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God: “Lord, why does your anger burn against your people you brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and a strong hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘He brought them out with an evil intent to kill them in the mountains and eliminate them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce anger and relent concerning this disaster planned for your people.(J) 13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel—you swore to them by yourself(K) and declared, ‘I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and will give your offspring all this land that I have promised, and they will inherit it forever.’”(L) 14 So the Lord relented(M) concerning the disaster he had said he would bring on his people.

Psalm 106:1-6

Psalm 106

Israel’s Unfaithfulness to God

Hallelujah!
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his faithful love endures forever.(A)
Who can declare the Lord’s mighty acts
or proclaim all the praise due him?(B)
How happy are those who uphold justice,
who practice righteousness at all times.(C)

Remember me, Lord,
when you show favor to your people.(D)
Come to me with your salvation
so that I may enjoy the prosperity
of your chosen ones,
rejoice in the joy of your nation,
and boast about your heritage.(E)

Both we and our ancestors have sinned;
we have done wrong and have acted wickedly.(F)

Psalm 106:19-23

19 At Horeb they made a calf
and worshiped the cast metal image.(A)
20 They exchanged their glory[a][b]
for the image of a grass-eating ox.(B)
21 They forgot God their Savior,
who did great things in Egypt,(C)
22 wondrous works in the land of Ham,[c]
awe-inspiring acts at the Red Sea.(D)
23 So he said he would have destroyed them—
if Moses his chosen one
had not stood before him in the breach
to turn his wrath away from destroying them.(E)

Philippians 4:1-9

So then, my dearly loved and longed for brothers and sisters, my joy and crown,(A) in this manner stand firm(B) in the Lord, dear friends.

Practical Counsel

I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to agree in the Lord. Yes, I also ask you, true partner,[a] to help these women who have contended for the gospel at my side, along with Clement and the rest of my coworkers whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your graciousness[b] be known to everyone. The Lord is near.(C) Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses(D) all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.(E)

Finally[c] brothers and sisters, whatever is true,(F) whatever is honorable,(G) whatever is just,(H) whatever is pure,(I) whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence(J) and if there is anything praiseworthy—dwell on these things. Do what you have learned and received(K) and heard from me, and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.

Matthew 22:1-14

The Parable of the Wedding Banquet

22 Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables: “The kingdom of heaven(A) is like a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son.(B) He sent his servants to summon those invited to the banquet,(C) but they didn’t want to come. Again, he sent out other servants and said, ‘Tell those who are invited: See, I’ve prepared my dinner; my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’(D)

“But they paid no attention and went away, one to his own farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king[a] was enraged, and he sent out his troops, killed those murderers, and burned down their city.

“Then he told his servants, ‘The banquet is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.(E) Go then to where the roads exit the city and invite everyone you find to the banquet.’(F) 10 So those servants went out on the roads and gathered everyone they found, both evil and good. The wedding banquet was filled with guests.[b] 11 When the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed for a wedding.(G) 12 So he said to him, ‘Friend,(H) how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ The man was speechless.

13 “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him up hand and foot,[c] and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

14 “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”(I)
