Psalm 106:1-6

Psalm 106[a]

Israel’s Confession of Sin

Hallelujah!

A

Give thanks to the Lord, who is good,
    whose mercy endures forever.(A)
Who can recount the mighty deeds of the Lord,
    proclaim in full God’s praise?
Blessed those who do what is right,
    whose deeds are always just.(B)
Remember me, Lord, as you favor your people;
come to me with your saving help,(C)
That I may see the prosperity of your chosen ones,
rejoice in the joy of your people,
    and glory with your heritage.

B

We have sinned like our ancestors;(D)
we have done wrong and are guilty.

Psalm 106:19-23

IV

19 At Horeb they fashioned a calf,(A)
    worshiped a metal statue.
20 They exchanged their glory[a]
for the image of a grass-eating bull.
21 They forgot the God who had saved them,
who had done great deeds in Egypt,(B)
22 Amazing deeds in the land of Ham,
fearsome deeds at the Red Sea.
23 He would have decreed their destruction,
had not Moses, his chosen one,
Withstood him in the breach[b]
to turn back his destroying anger.(C)

Exodus 24:9-11

Moses then went up with Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy elders of Israel, 10 and they beheld the God of Israel. Under his feet there appeared to be sapphire tilework, as clear as the sky itself. 11 Yet he did not lay a hand on these chosen Israelites. They saw God,[a] and they ate and drank.

James 4:4-10

Adulterers![a] Do you not know that to be a lover of the world means enmity with God? Therefore, whoever wants to be a lover of the world makes himself an enemy of God.(A) Or do you suppose that the scripture speaks without meaning when it says, “The spirit that he has made to dwell in us tends toward jealousy”?[b] But he bestows a greater grace; therefore, it says:(B)

“God resists the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.”[c]

So submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.(C) Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you of two minds.(D) Begin to lament, to mourn, to weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into dejection. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you.(E)
