A New Beginning in Zion and David
1 A maskil of Asaph.
I
Attend, my people, to my teaching;
listen to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in a parable,[b]
unfold the puzzling events of the past.(A)
3 What we have heard and know;
things our ancestors have recounted to us.(B)
4 We do not keep them from our children;
we recount them to the next generation,
The praiseworthy deeds of the Lord and his strength,
the wonders that he performed.(C)
II
A
12 In the sight of their ancestors God did wonders,
in the land of Egypt, the plain of Zoan.[a](A)
13 He split the sea and led them across,(B)
making the waters stand like walls.(C)
14 He led them with a cloud by day,
all night with the light of fire.(D)
15 He split rocks in the desert,
gave water to drink, abundant as the deeps of the sea.(E)
16 He made streams flow from crags,
caused rivers of water to flow down.
Joshua to Succeed Moses. 12 The Lord said to Moses: Go up into this mountain of the Abarim range[a] and view the land that I have given to the Israelites.(A) 13 When you have viewed it, you will be gathered to your people, as was Aaron your brother.(B) 14 For in the rebellion of the community in the wilderness of Zin you both rebelled against my order to acknowledge my holiness before them by means of the water.(C) (These were the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)
27 They returned once more to Jerusalem.(A) As he was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders approached him 28 and said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them?” 29 Jesus said to them, “I shall ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was John’s baptism of heavenly or of human origin? Answer me.” 31 They discussed this among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘Of heavenly origin,’ he will say, ‘[Then] why did you not believe him?’ 32 But shall we say, ‘Of human origin’?”—they feared the crowd, for they all thought John really was a prophet. 33 So they said to Jesus in reply, “We do not know.” Then Jesus said to them, “Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
