Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Tell the Coming Generation
A Maskil[a] of (A)Asaph.
78 (B)Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
2 (C)I will open my mouth (D)in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings from of old,
3 things that we have heard and known,
that our (E)fathers have told us.
4 We will not (F)hide them from their children,
but (G)tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
and (H)the wonders that he has done.
12 In the sight of their fathers (A)he performed wonders
in the land of Egypt, in (B)the fields of Zoan.
13 He (C)divided the sea and let them pass through it,
and made the waters (D)stand like a heap.
14 (E)In the daytime he led them with a cloud,
and all the night with a fiery light.
15 He (F)split rocks in the wilderness
and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.
16 He made streams come out of (G)the rock
and caused waters to flow down like rivers.
Joshua to Succeed Moses
12 The Lord said to Moses, “Go up into (A)this mountain of Abarim and see the land that I have given to the people of Israel. 13 When you have seen it, you also (B)shall be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, 14 (C)because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin when the congregation quarreled, failing (D)to uphold me as holy at the waters before their eyes.” (These are (E)the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)
The Authority of Jesus Challenged
27 (A)And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, 28 and they said to him, (B)“By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?” 29 Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was the baptism of John (C)from heaven or from man? Answer me.” 31 And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, (D)‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 32 But shall we say, ‘From man’?”—(E)they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was (F)a prophet. 33 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
