Psalm 124

Psalm 124

The Lord Is on Our Side

A song of ascents. Of David.

If the Lord had not been on our side—
let Israel say—
if the Lord had not been on our side(A)
when people attacked us,(B)
then they would have swallowed us alive
in their burning anger against us.(C)
Then the water would have engulfed us;
the torrent would have swept over us;
the raging water would have swept over us.(D)

Blessed be the Lord,
who has not let us be ripped apart by their teeth.(E)
We have escaped like a bird from the hunter’s net;
the net is torn, and we have escaped.(F)
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.(G)

Genesis 50:15-26

Joseph’s Kindness

15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said to one another, “If Joseph is holding a grudge against us, he will certainly repay us for all the suffering we caused him.”(A)

16 So they sent this message to Joseph, “Before he died your father gave a command: 17 ‘Say this to Joseph: Please forgive your brothers’ transgression and their sin—the suffering they caused you.’ Therefore, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept(B) when their message came to him. 18 His brothers also came to him, bowed down before him, and said, “We are your slaves!”

19 But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?(C) 20 You planned evil against me; God planned it for good to bring about the present result—the survival of many people.(D) 21 Therefore don’t be afraid. I will take care of you and your children.”(E) And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.[a]

Joseph’s Death

22 Joseph and his father’s family remained in Egypt. Joseph lived 110 years. 23 He saw Ephraim’s sons to the third generation;(F) the sons of Manasseh’s son Machir were recognized by[b][c] Joseph.(G)

24 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die,(H) but God will certainly come to your aid and bring you up from this land to the land he swore to give to Abraham,(I) Isaac,(J) and Jacob.”(K) 25 So Joseph made the sons of Israel take an oath: “When God comes to your aid, you are to carry my bones up from here.”(L)

26 Joseph died at the age of 110. They embalmed him and placed him in a coffin in Egypt.

Matthew 16:5-12

The disciples reached the other shore,[a] and they had forgotten to take bread. Then Jesus told them, “Watch out and beware of the leaven[b] of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”(A)

They were discussing among themselves, “We didn’t bring any bread.”

Aware of this, Jesus said, “You of little faith,(B) why are you discussing among yourselves that you do not have bread? Don’t you understand yet? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand and how many baskets you collected? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand and how many large baskets you collected?(C) 11 Why is it you don’t understand that when I told you, ‘Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees,’ it wasn’t about bread?”(D) 12 Then they understood that he had not told them to beware of the leaven in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.(E)
