Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
28 1 Being in great fear and heaviness of heart to see God dishonored by the wicked, he desireth to be rid of them. 4 And crieth for vengeance against them: and at length assureth himself, that God hath heard his prayer, 9 Unto whose tuition he commendeth all the faithful.
A Psalm of David.
1 Unto thee, O Lord, do I cry: O my strength, be not deaf toward me, lest if thou answer me not, I be like [a]them that go down into the pit.
2 Hear the voice of my petitions, when I cry unto thee, when I hold up my hands toward thine [b]holy Oracle.
3 [c]Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity: which speak friendly to their neighbors, when malice is in their hearts.
4 [d]Reward them according to their deeds, and according to the wickedness of their inventions: recompense them after the work of their hands: render them their reward.
5 For they reward not the works of the Lord, nor the operation of his hands: therefore [e]break them down, and build them not up.
6 [f]Praised be the Lord, for he hath heard the voice of my petitions.
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield: mine heart trusted in him, and I was helped: therefore mine heart shall rejoice, and with my song will I praise him.
8 The Lord is [g]their strength, and he is the strength of the deliverances of his anointed.
9 Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance: feed them also, and exalt them forever.
39 1 Joseph sold to Potiphar. 2 God prospereth him. 7 Potiphar’s wife tempteth him. 13, 20 He is accused and cast in prison. 23 God showeth him favor.
1 Now Joseph was brought down into Egypt: and Potiphar [a]an Eunuch of Pharaoh’s (and his chief steward an Egyptian) bought him at the hand of the Ishmaelites, which had brought him thither.
2 And the [b]Lord was with Joseph, and he was a man that prospered and was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
4 So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him: and made him [c]ruler of his house, and put all that he had in his hand.
5 And from that time that he had made him ruler over his house and over all that he had, the Lord [d]blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake: and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
6 Therefore he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, [e]and took account of nothing, that was with him, save only of the bread, which he did eat. And Joseph was a fair person, and well favored.
7 Now therefore after these things, his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and said, [f]Lie with me.
8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, Behold, my master knoweth not what he hath in the house with me, but hath committed all that he had to mine hand.
9 There is no man greater in this house than I: neither hath he kept anything from me, but only thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness and so sin against [g]God?
10 And albeit she spake to Joseph day by day, yet he hearkened not unto her, to lie with her, or to be in her company.
11 Then on a certain day Joseph entered into the house to do his business: and there was no man of the household in the house.
12 Therefore she caught him by his garment, saying, Sleep with me: but he left his garment in her hand and fled, and got him out.
13 Now when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled out,
14 She called unto the men of her house, and told them, saying, Behold, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us [h]to mock us: who came in to me for to have slept with me: but I [i]cried with a loud voice.
15 And when he heard that I lift up my voice and cried, he left his garments with me, and fled away, and got him out.
16 So she laid up his garment by her, until her lord came home.
17 Then she told him [j]according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came into me, to mock me.
18 But as soon as I lift up my voice and cried, he left his garment with me, and fled out.
19 Then when his master heard the words of his wife, which she told him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me, his anger was kindled.
20 And Joseph’s master took him and put him in [k][l]prison, in the place, where the king’s prisoners lay bound: and there he was in prison.
21 ¶ But the Lord was with Joseph, and [m]showed him mercy, and got him favor in the sight of the [n]master of the prison.
22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison, and [o]whatsoever they did there, that did he.
23 And the keeper of the prison looked unto nothing that was under his hand, seeing that the Lord was with him: for whatsoever he did, the Lord made it to prosper.
14 [a]What shall we say then? Is there [b]unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
15 [c]For he saith to Moses, (A)I will [d]have mercy on him, to whom I will show mercy: and will have [e]compassion on him, on who I will have compassion.
16 [f]So then it is not in him that [g]willeth, nor in him that runneth, but in God that showeth mercy.
17 [h]For the [i]Scripture saith unto Pharaoh, (B)For this same purpose have [j]I stirred thee up, that I might [k]show my power in thee, and that my Name might be declared throughout all the earth.
18 [l]Therefore he hath mercy on whom he [m]will, and whom he will he hardeneth.
19 [n]Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet complain? for who hath resisted his will?
20 [o]But, O man, who art thou which pleadest against God? [p]shall the (C)thing [q]formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21 (D)[r]Hath not the potter power of the clay to make of the same lump one [s]vessel to [t]honor, and another unto [u]dishonor?
22 [v]What and if God would, to show his wrath, and to make his power known, suffer with long patience the [w]vessels of wrath, prepared to [x]destruction?
23 And that he might declare the [y]riches of his glory upon the vessels of mercy, which he hath prepared unto glory?
24 [z]Even us whom he hath called, not of the [aa]Jews only, but also of the Gentiles.
25 [ab]As he saith also in Hosea, (E)I will call them, My people, which were not my people: and her, Beloved, which was not beloved.
26 And it shall be in the place where it was said unto them, (F)Ye are not my people, that there they shall be called, The children of the living God.
27 [ac]Also Isaiah crieth concerning Israel, (G)Though the number of the children of Israel were as the sand of the sea, yet shall but a remnant be saved.
28 For he will make his account, and gather it into a [ad]short sum with righteousness: for the Lord will make a short count in the earth.
29 (H)And as Isaiah said before, Except the Lord of [ae]hosts had left us a [af]seed, we had been made as Sodom, and had been like to Gomorrah.
