Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
8 Then the child grew and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned.
9 ¶ And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian (which she had borne unto Abraham) [a]mocking.
10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, (A)Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.
11 And this thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight, because of his son.
12 ¶ But God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight for the child, and for thy bondwoman: in all that Sarah shall say unto thee, hear her voice: for in Isaac shall thy seed be [b]called.
13 As for the son of the bondwoman, I will make him [c]a nation also, because he is thy seed.
14 So Abraham arose up early in the morning and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar putting it on her shoulder, and the child also, and [d]sent her away: who departing, wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
15 And when the water of the bottle was spent, she cast the child under a certain tree.
16 Then she went and sat her over against him afar off about a bow shoot: for she said, I will not see the death of the child. And she sat down over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept.
17 Then God [e]heard the voice of the child, and the Angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not, for God hath heard the voice of the child where he is.
18 Arise, take up the child, and hold him in thine hand: for I will make him a great people.
19 And God [f]opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water: so she went and filled the bottle with water, and gave the boy drink.
20 So God was [g]with the child, and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, and was an [h]archer.
21 And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.
86 1 David sore afflicted and forsaken of all, prayeth fervently for deliverance: sometimes rehearsing his miseries, 5 Sometimes the mercies received. 11 Desiring also to be instructed of the Lord, that he may fear him, and glorify his Name. 14 He complaineth also of his adversaries, and requireth to be delivered from them.
A prayer of David.
1 Incline [a]thine ear, O Lord, and hear me: for I am poor and needy.
2 Preserve thou my soul, for I am [b]merciful: my God, save thou thy servant, that trusteth in thee.
3 Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I [c]cry upon thee continually.
4 Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
5 For thou, Lord, art good and [d]merciful, and of great kindness unto all them that call upon thee.
6 Give ear, Lord, unto my prayer, and [e]hearken to the voice of my supplication.
7 In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou hearest me.
8 Among the gods there is none like thee, O Lord, and there is none [f]that can do like thy works.
9 All nations whom thou hast made, shall come and [g]worship before thee, O Lord, and shall glorify thy Name.
10 For thou art great and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.
16 Turn unto me, and have mercy upon me: give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the [a]son of thine handmaid.
17 Show a token of thy goodness toward me, that they which hate me, may see it, and be ashamed, because thou, O Lord, hast helped me and comforted me.
6 1 He cometh to sanctification, without which, that no man putteth on Christ’s righteousness, he proveth 4 by an argument taken of Baptism, 12 and thereupon exhorteth to holiness of life, 16 briefly making mention of the Law transgressed.
1 What [a]shall we say then? Shall we continue still in [b]sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.
2 [c]How shall we, that are [d]dead to sin, live yet therein?
3 [e]Know ye not, that (A)all we which have been baptized into [f]Jesus Christ, have been baptized into his death?
4 (B)We are buried then with him by baptism into his death, that like as Christ was raised up from the dead [g]to the glory of the Father, so [h]we also should (C)walk in newness of life.
5 (D)[i]For if we be planted with him to the [j]similitude of his death, even so shall we [k]be to the similitude of his resurrection,
6 Knowing this, that our [l]old man is crucified with [m]him, that the body of [n]sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not [o]serve sin,
7 [p]For he that is dead, is freed from sin.
8 Wherefore, if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall live also with him,
9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead, dieth no more: death hath no more dominion over him.
10 For in that he died, he died [q]once to sin: but in that he liveth, he liveth to [r]God.
11 Likewise think ye also, that ye are dead to sin, but are alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord.
24 (A)The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his Lord.
25 It is enough for the disciple to be as his master is, and the servant as his Lord. (B)If they have called the master of the house [a]Beelzebub, how much more them of his household?
26 [b]Fear them not therefore: (C)for there is nothing covered, that shall not be disclosed, nor hid, that shall not be known.
27 What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye on the [c]houses.
28 And [d]fear ye not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him, which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a [e]farthing, and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father?
30 (D)Yea, and all the hairs of your head are numbered.
31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
32 (E)[f]Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
34 (F)[g]Think not that I am come to send peace into the earth, but the sword.
35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
36 (G)And a man’s enemies shall be they of his own household.
37 (H)[h]He that loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me. And he that loveth son, or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me.
38 (I)And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
39 (J)He that will find [i]his life, shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake, shall find it.
