Psalm 86:1-10

David's prayer.

A prayer for help

86 Lord, please listen to me,
    and answer me!
I am weak and I need help.
I am your faithful servant,
    so keep my life safe!
Please save me, my God,
    for I trust in you.
My Lord, be kind to me.
All through the day,
I am calling to you for help.
Please make me happy deep inside,
for you are the one that I pray to, my Lord.
Yes, my Lord, you are very kind,
and you are ready to forgive people.
When anyone calls to you for help,
you love them with your faithful love.
Lord, hear my prayer!
Please listen when I call to you for help.
Whenever trouble comes to me,
    I will pray to you.
I know that you will answer me.
There is no one like you, my Lord,
    among all the gods.
Nobody can do the great things that you do.
You have made all the nations of the world,
and they will all come to worship you, my Lord.
They will agree that your name is great.
10 For you are great and you do great things.
    You alone are God.

Ezekiel 29:3-7

Tell them, “The Almighty Lord says this:

Listen, Pharaoh, king of Egypt, I have become your enemy.
You are like the great monster that lies in Egypt's streams.
You say, ‘The Nile river belongs to me! I made it for myself.’
But I will put hooks into your mouth and catch you.
I will cause the fish in your streams to hang on your scales.[a]
I will pull you out from the streams with all those fish on you.
I will leave you in the wilderness with all your fish.
You will lie on the ground in the open fields.
Nobody will pick you up or take care of you.
I will give you to the wild animals and birds to be their food.

Then all the people who live in Egypt will know that I am the Lord. Israel's people thought that you would help them. But you were only like a weak stick for them. When they wanted you to hold them up, you broke into pieces. Your sharp pieces tore their shoulders. When they held on to you, you caused their legs to shake.

Luke 11:53-12:3

53 Then Jesus left that place. The Pharisees and the teachers of God's Law were angry against Jesus. They were asking him many difficult questions. 54 They wanted to make him say something wrong. Then they could take hold of him.

Jesus tells the people to be careful how they live

12 While all this was happening, many thousands of people had come together near that place. The crowd was so big that people were almost walking over each other. Jesus began to talk first to his disciples. He said, ‘Be careful! Do not accept the yeast of the Pharisees.[a] Do not be hypocrites like they are.

Some people hide the things that they do. But there will be a time when other people will see those things clearly. Everyone will know all their secrets. You may have said things secretly, in the dark of the night. But one day, people will hear those things in the light of day. You may have said things quietly into someone's ear, behind a door that you have shut. But one day, people will shout out those secrets loudly from the tops of the houses.
