Psalm 116:1-4

Thanksgiving for Escaping Death

116 I love the Lord,
    because he ·listens to my prayers for help [L hears/or heard my voice, my prayer of supplication].
He ·paid attention [L extends his ear] to me,
    so I will ·call to him for help [call; pray] ·as long as I live [L in my days].
The ·ropes [cords] of death ·bound [encompass] me,
    and the ·fear [hardship; distress] of ·the grave [L Sheol; C the grave or the underworld] ·took hold of [reached; found] me.
    I ·was troubled and sad [L found distress and sadness].
Then I ·called out [prayed in] the name of the Lord.
    I said, “Please, Lord, ·save [rescue] me!”

Psalm 116:12-19

12 What can I ·give [L return to] the Lord
    for all the ·good things [benefits] he has given to me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation,
    and I will pray ·to [L in the name of] the Lord.
14 I will ·give the Lord what I promised [pay my vow to the Lord]
    in front of all his people.

15 The death of ·one that belongs to the Lord [his loyal ones/saints]
    is precious in his ·sight [L eyes].
16 Lord, I am your servant;
    I am your servant and the son of your female servant.
    You have ·freed me from [loosened] my chains.
17 I will give you ·an offering to show thanks to you [a thanksgiving offering],
    and I will pray ·to [L in the name of] the Lord.
18 I will ·give the Lord what I promised [pay my vow to the Lord]
    in front of all his people,
19 in the ·Temple courtyards [L courtyards of the house of the Lord]
    in your midst, Jerusalem.

Praise the Lord!

Isaiah 25:1-5

A Song of Praise to God

25 Lord, you are my God.
    I ·honor [exalt] you and praise ·you [L your name],
because you have done ·amazing [wonderful] things.
    ·You have done what you planned long ago [Your plans were made long ago];
    ·you have always done what you said you would do [they are faithful and trustworthy];
You have made the city a ·pile of rocks [L heap]
    ·and have destroyed her walls [L the fortified city into a ruin].
The ·city our enemies built with strong walls [or foreigners’ fortress] is gone;
    it will never be built again.
People from powerful nations will ·honor [glorify] you;
    ·cruel people from strong cities [L cities of cruel/ruthless people] will fear you.
You ·protect [L are a refuge/stronghold to] the poor;
    you protect the ·helpless [needy] when they are in ·danger [distress].
You are like a shelter from storms,
    like shade that protects them from the heat.
The ·cruel people attack [L breath of the cruel/ruthless]
    like a rainstorm beating against the wall,
    like the ·heat [or drought] in the desert.
But you, God, ·stop their violent attack [L subdue/silence the uproar of foreigners].
    As the shadow from a cloud cools a hot day,
you silence the songs of ·those who have no mercy [the ruthless].

1 Peter 1:8-12

You have not seen ·Christ [L him], but still you love him. You cannot see him now, but you believe in him. So you ·are filled [rejoice] with ·a joy that cannot be explained, a joy full of glory [an inexpressible and glorious joy]. ·And you are receiving [or …because you are receiving] the ·goal [outcome; purpose] of your faith—the salvation of your souls.

10 The prophets [C of the Old Testament] searched carefully and ·tried to learn [diligently inquired/investigated] about this salvation. They prophesied about the grace that was coming to you. 11 The Spirit of Christ was in the prophets, ·telling [witnessing; testifying] in advance about the sufferings of Christ and about the glory that would follow those sufferings [Luke 24:25–27, 45–49]. The prophets ·tried to learn [inquired; investigated] about what the Spirit was showing them, ·when those things would happen, and what the world would be like at that time [about the circumstances and time; or about the person and time]. 12 It was ·shown [revealed to] them that their service was not for themselves but for you, when they ·told about [announced] the truths [L things] you have now heard. Those who preached the ·Good News [Gospel] to you ·told you [announced] those things with the help of the Holy Spirit who was sent from heaven—things into which angels desire to look.
