Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
The Reign of Yahweh’s Anointed
2 Why do (A)the [a]nations rage
And the peoples (B)meditate on a vain thing?
2 The (C)kings of the earth take their stand
And the rulers take counsel together
(D)Against Yahweh and against His [b](E)Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us (F)tear their fetters apart
And cast away their cords from us!”
4 He who [c]sits in the heavens (G)laughs,
The Lord (H)mocks them.
5 Then He speaks to them in His (I)anger
And (J)terrifies them in His fury, saying,
6 “But as for Me, I have [d]installed (K)My King
Upon Zion, (L)My holy mountain.”
7 “I will surely tell of the [e]decree of Yahweh:
He said to Me, ‘You are (M)My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
8 Ask of Me, and (N)I will surely give (O)the [f]nations as Your inheritance,
And the (P)ends of the earth as Your possession.
9 You shall [g](Q)break them with a [h]rod of iron,
You shall (R)shatter them like a potter’s vessel.’”
20 And Ahab said to Elijah, “(A)Have you found me, O my enemy?” And he [a]answered, “I have found you, (B)because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of Yahweh. 21 Behold, I will bring evil upon you, and (C)will utterly sweep you away, and will cut off from Ahab every [b]male, both bond and free in Israel; 22 and (D)I will make your house (E)like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, because of the provocation with which you have provoked Me to anger, and because you (F)have made Israel sin. 23 Of Jezebel also has Yahweh spoken, saying, ‘(G)The dogs will eat Jezebel in the [c]district of Jezreel.’ 24 (H)The one belonging to Ahab, who dies in the city, the dogs will eat, and the one who dies in the field the birds of the sky will eat.”
Ahab Humbles Himself
25 (I)Surely there was no one who sold himself to do what is evil in the sight of Yahweh like Ahab, whom Jezebel his wife incited. 26 (J)And he acted very abominably in following idols, (K)according to all that the Amorites had done, whom Yahweh dispossessed before the sons of Israel.
27 Now it happened when Ahab heard these words, that (L)he tore his clothes and put [d]on sackcloth and fasted, and he lay in sackcloth and went about [e]despondently. 28 Then the word of Yahweh came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 29 “Do you see how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the evil in his days, but I will bring the evil upon his house (M)in his son’s days.”
9 (A)And as they were coming down from the mountain, He (B)gave them orders not to recount to anyone what they had seen, [a]until the Son of Man rose from the dead. 10 And they [b]seized upon [c]that statement, arguing with one another [d]what rising from the dead meant. 11 And they began asking Him, saying, “Why is it that the scribes say that (C)Elijah must come first?” 12 And He said to them, “Elijah does first come and restore all things. And yet how is it written of (D)the Son of Man that (E)He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I say to you that Elijah has [e]indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written of him.”
