Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
6 An exhortation to the dumb creatures to hear the judgment against Israel being unkind. 6 What manner of sacrifices do please God.
1 Hearken ye now what the Lord saith, Arise thou, and contend before the [a]mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.
2 Hear ye, O mountains, the Lord’s quarrel, and ye mighty foundations of the earth: for the Lord hath a quarrel against his people, and he will plead with Israel.
3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? or wherein have I grieved thee? testify against me.
4 Surely I [b]brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants, and I have sent before thee, Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
5 O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab had devised, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him, from [c]Shittim unto Gilgal, that ye may know the [d]righteousness of the Lord.
6 Wherewith [e]shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, and with calves of a year old?
7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousand rivers of oil? shall I give my [f]firstborn for my transgression, even the fruit of my body, for the sin of my soul?
8 He hath showed thee, O man, what is good, and what the Lord requireth of thee: [g]surely to do justly, and to love mercy, and to humble thyself, to walk with thy God.
15 1 This Psalm teacheth on what condition God did choose the Jews for his peculiar people; and wherefore he placed his Temple among them, which was to the intent that they by living uprightly and godly, might witness that they were his special and holy people.
A Psalm of David.
1 Lord, who shall dwell in thy Tabernacle? who shall rest in thine holy Mountain?
2 He that [a]walketh uprightly and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.
3 He that slandereth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbor, nor receiveth a false report against his neighbor.
4 [b]In whose eyes a vile person is contemned, but he honoreth them that fear the Lord: he that sweareth to his own hindrance and changeth not.
5 He that [c]giveth not his money unto usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent: he that doeth these things, [d]shall never be moved.
18 For that [a]preaching of the cross is to them that perish, foolishness: but unto us, which are saved, it is the (A)[b]power of God.
19 [c]For it is written, (B)I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will cast away the understanding of the prudent.
20 Where is the wise? where is the [d]Scribe? where is the [e]disputer of this world? hath not God made the wisdom of this world foolishness?
21 [f]For seeing the [g]world by wisdom knew not God in the [h]wisdom of GOD, [i]it pleased God by the [j]foolishness of preaching to save them that believe:
22 (C)[k]Seeing also that the Jews require a sign, and the Grecians seek after wisdom.
23 But we preach Christ crucified: unto the Jews, even a stumbling block, and unto the Grecians, foolishness:
24 But unto them which are called, both of the Jews and Grecians, we preach Christ, the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
26 [l]For brethren, you see your [m]calling, how that not many wise men [n]after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called.
27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and God hath chosen the weak things of the world, to confound the mighty things,
28 And vile things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, and things which [o]are not, to bring to [p]nought things that are.
29 That no [q]flesh should rejoice in his presence.
30 But ye are [r]of him in Christ Jesus, [s]who of God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.
31 That, according as it is written, (D)[t]He that rejoiceth, let him rejoice in the Lord.
5 1 Who are blessed. 13 The Apostles are the salt and light of the world. 14 The city set on an hill. 15 The candle. 16 Good works. 19 The fulfilling of Christ’s commandments. 21 What killing is. 23 Reconciliation is set before sacrifice. 27 Adultery. 29 The plucking out of the eye. 30 Cutting off of the hand. 31 The bill of divorcement. 33 Not to swear. 44 To love our enemies. 48 Perfectness.
1 And when he saw the multitude, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came to him.
2 [a]And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3 (A)Blessed are the [b]poor in [c]spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 (B)Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 (C)Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 (D)Blessed are they which hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the (E)[d]pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 Blessed are they (F)which suffer persecution for righteousness’ sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 (G)Blessed shall ye be when men revile you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you for my sake, falsely.
12 Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the Prophets which were before you.
