Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
2 1 The song of Hannah. 12 The sons of Eli, wicked. 13 The new custom of the Priests. 18 Samuel ministereth before the Lord. 20 Eli blesseth Elkanah and his wife. 23 Eli reproveth his sons. 27 God sendeth a Prophet to Eli. 31 Eli is menaced for not chastising his children.
1 And Hannah [a]prayed, and said, Mine heart rejoiceth in the Lord, mine [b]horn is exalted in the Lord: my mouth is [c]enlarged over mine enemies, because I rejoice in thy salvation.
2 There is none holy as the Lord: yea, there is none besides thee, and there is no god like our God.
3 Speak [d]no more presumptuously: let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him enterprises are established.
4 The bow and the mighty men are broken, and the weak have girded themselves with strength.
5 They that were full, are hired forth for [e]bread, and the hungry are no more hired, so that the barren hath borne [f]seven: and she that had many children is feeble.
6 (A)The Lord killeth and maketh alive: bringeth down to the grave and raiseth up.
7 The Lord maketh poor and maketh rich: bringeth low, and exalteth.
8 (B)He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among [g]princes, and to make them inherit the seat of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the [h]Lord’s, and he hath set the world upon them.
9 He will keep the feet of his Saints, and the wicked shall keep silence in darkness: for in his own might shall no man be strong.
10 The Lord’s adversaries shall be destroyed, and out of heaven shall he (C)thunder upon them: the Lord shall judge the ends of the world, and shall give power unto his [i]King, and exalt the horn of his Anointed.
21 3 Isaac is born. 9 Ishmael mocketh Isaac. 14 Hagar is cast out with her son. 17 The Angel comforteth Hagar. 32 The covenant between Abimelech and Abraham. 33 Abraham called upon the Lord.
1 Now the Lord visited Sarah, as he had said, and did unto her (A)according as he had promised.
2 For (B)Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his [a]old age, at the same season that God told him.
3 And Abraham called his son’s name that was born unto him, which Sarah bare him, Isaac.
4 Then Abraham circumcised Isaac his son, when he was eight days old, (C)as God had commanded him.
5 So Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.
6 ¶ Then Sarah said, God hath made me to rejoice: all that hear, will rejoice with me.
7 Again she said, [b]Who would have said to Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have borne him a son in his old age.
8 Then the child grew and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned.
9 ¶ And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian (which she had borne unto Abraham) [c]mocking.
10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, (D)Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.
11 And this thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight, because of his son.
12 ¶ But God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight for the child, and for thy bondwoman: in all that Sarah shall say unto thee, hear her voice: for in Isaac shall thy seed be [d]called.
13 As for the son of the bondwoman, I will make him [e]a nation also, because he is thy seed.
14 So Abraham arose up early in the morning and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar putting it on her shoulder, and the child also, and [f]sent her away: who departing, wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
15 And when the water of the bottle was spent, she cast the child under a certain tree.
16 Then she went and sat her over against him afar off about a bow shoot: for she said, I will not see the death of the child. And she sat down over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept.
17 Then God [g]heard the voice of the child, and the Angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not, for God hath heard the voice of the child where he is.
18 Arise, take up the child, and hold him in thine hand: for I will make him a great people.
19 And God [h]opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water: so she went and filled the bottle with water, and gave the boy drink.
20 So God was [i]with the child, and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, and was an [j]archer.
21 And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.
21 [a]Tell me, ye that [b]will be under the Law, do ye not hear the Law?
22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, (A)one by a servant, and (B)one by a free woman.
23 But he which was of the servant, was born after the [c]flesh: and he which was of the free woman, was born by [d]promise.
24 By the which things another thing is meant: for [e]these mothers are the [f]two Testaments, the one which is Hagar of mount [g]Sinai, which gendereth unto bondage.
25 (For Hagar or Sinai is a mountain in Arabia, and it [h]answered to Jerusalem which now is) and [i]she is in bondage with her children.
26 But Jerusalem, which is [j]above, is free: which is the mother of us all.
27 [k]For it is written, (C)Rejoice thou barren that bearest no children: break forth, and cry, thou that travailest not: for the [l]desolate hath many more children, than she which hath an husband.
28 (D)Therefore, brethren, we are after the [m]manner of Isaac, children of the [n]promise.
29 But as then he that was born after the [o]flesh, persecuted him that was born after the [p]Spirit, even so it is now.
30 But what saith the Scripture? (E)Put out the servant and her son: for the son of the servant shall not be heir with the son of the free woman.
31 [q]Then brethren, we are not children of the servant, but of the free woman.
5 1 Having declared that we came of the free woman, he showeth the price of that freedom, 13 and how we should use the same, 16 that we may obey the Spirit, 19 and resist the flesh.
1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
