Psalm 122

(A song by David for worship.)

A Song of Praise

It made me glad when they said,
“Let's go to the house
    of the Lord!”
Jerusalem, we are standing
    inside your gates.

Jerusalem, what a strong
    and beautiful city you are!
Every tribe of the Lord
obeys him and comes to you
    to praise his name.
David's royal throne is here
    where justice rules.

Jerusalem, we pray
    that you will have peace,
and that all will go well
    for those who love you.
May there be peace
inside your city walls
    and in your palaces.
Because of my friends
and my relatives,
    I will pray for peace.
And because of the house
of the Lord our God,
I will work for your good.

Daniel 9:15-19

15 (A) Our Lord God, with your own mighty arm you rescued us from Egypt and made yourself famous to this very day, but we have sinned terribly. 16 In the past, you treated us with such kindness, that we now beg you to stop being so terribly angry with Jerusalem. After all, it is your chosen city built on your holy mountain, even though it has suffered public disgrace because of our sins and those of our ancestors.

17 (B) I am your servant, Lord God, and I beg you to answer my prayers and bring honor to yourself by having pity on your temple that lies in ruins. 18 (C) Please show mercy to your chosen city, not because we deserve it, but because of your great kindness. 19 Forgive us! Hurry and do something, not only for your city and your chosen people, but to bring honor to yourself.

James 4:1-10

Friendship with the World

Why do you fight and argue with each other? Isn't it because you are full of selfish desires that fight to control your body? You want something you don't have, and you will do anything to get it. You will even kill! But you still cannot get what you want, and you won't get it by fighting and arguing. You should pray for it. Yet even when you do pray, your prayers are not answered, because you pray just for selfish reasons.

You people aren't faithful to God! Don't you know if you love the world, you are God's enemies? And if you decide to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. Do you doubt the Scriptures that say, “God truly cares about the Spirit he has put in us”?[a] (A) In fact, God treats us with even greater kindness, just as the Scriptures say,

“God opposes everyone
    who is proud,
but he blesses all who are humble
    with undeserved grace.”

Surrender to God! Resist the devil, and he will run from you. Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Clean up your lives, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you people who can't make up your mind. Be sad and sorry and weep. Stop laughing and start crying. Be gloomy instead of glad. 10 Be humble in the Lord's presence, and he will honor you.
