Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
This One Was Born in Zion
Psalm 87
1 A psalm of the sons of Korah, a song.
His foundation is in the holy mountains.
2 Adonai loves the gates of Zion
more than all the dwellings of Jacob.
3 Glorious things are spoken of you,
city of God. Selah
4 “I will mention Rahab and Babylon among those who acknowledge Me—
behold Philistia and Tyre, with Cush:
‘This one was born there.’”
5 But of Zion it will be said:
“This one and that one were born in her.”
And Elyon Himself will establish her.
6 Adonai will count in the register of the peoples:
“This one was born there.” Selah
7 Then singing and dancing—
all my fountains of joy are in you!
Promise of the Ruach Adonai
3 “So it will be afterward,[a]
I will pour out My Ruach on all flesh:[b]
your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.
2 “Also on the male and the female servants
will I pour out My spirit in those days.[c]
3 I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth—
blood, fire and pillars of smoke.[d]
4 The sun will be turned into darkness
and the moon into blood, before the great and awesome day of Adonai comes.
5 Then all who call on Adonai’s Name[e] will escape,
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
there will be rescue, as Adonai has said,
among the survivors whom Adonai is calling.”
12 Loved ones, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal taking place among you to test you—as though something strange were happening to you. 13 Instead, rejoice insofar as you share in the sufferings of Messiah, so that at the revelation of His glory you may also rejoice and be glad. 14 If you are insulted for the name of Messiah,[a] you are fortunate, for the Spirit of glory[b] and of God rests on you. 15 For let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or evildoer or as a troublemaker. 16 But if anyone suffers for following Messiah,[c] let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this name. 17 For the time has come for judgment to begin with the house of God.[d] If judgment begins with us first, what will be the end for those who disobey the Good News of God?
18 Now, “if it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
what shall become of the ungodly and the sinner?”[e]
19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will—let them trust their souls to a faithful Creator while continuing to do good.
