Psalm 65

God’s Favor to Earth and Man

65 All will be quiet before You, and praise belongs to You, O God, in Zion. And our promise to You will be kept. O You Who hears prayer, to You all men come. My sins are strong against me. But You forgive our sins. Happy is the man You choose and bring near to You to live in Your holy place. We will be filled with the good things of Your house, Your holy house.

O God Who saves us, You answer us in the way that is right and good by Your great works that make people stand in fear. You are the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas. You have built the mountains by Your strength. You are dressed with power. You quiet the storm of the seas, the sound of their waves, and the noise of the people. Those who live far away are afraid of Your great works. You make morning and evening call out for joy.

You visit the earth and water it. You make it very rich. The river of God is full of water. You give the people grain when You have made the earth ready. 10 You water where the plow has been used. You cover the seeds with earth. You make it soft with rain. And You make the plants grow well. 11 You crown the year with Your good gifts. There is more than enough where You have been. 12 The fields of the desert are filled with water. And the hills dress themselves with joy. 13 The grass lands are covered with birds. And the valleys are covered with grain. They call out for joy and sing.

Joel 1

This is the word of the Lord that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel.

The Land Is Destroyed

Hear this, you old men. Listen, all who live in the land. Has anything like this happened in your days or in your fathers’ days? Tell your sons about it, and let your sons tell their sons, and their sons tell the next sons-to-come.

What the chewing locust has left, the flying locust has eaten. What the flying locust has left, the jumping locust has eaten. And what the jumping locust has left, the destroying locust has eaten. Wake up and cry, you who drink too much. Cry in a loud voice, all you who drink wine, for the sweet wine has been taken from your lips. A nation has come to fight against my land. Its army is powerful, with too many to number. Its teeth are the teeth of a lion. It has the long, sharp teeth of a female lion. It has made my vine a waste, and has broken my fig tree to pieces. It has torn off their covering and thrown it away. Their branches have become white.

Cry in sorrow like a young, pure woman dressed in cloth made from hair because the man she was going to marry is dead. The grain gifts and drink gifts have been cut off from the house of the Lord. The religious leaders who served the Lord are full of sorrow. 10 The fields are laid waste and the land is full of sorrow. The grain is destroyed, the new wine dries up, and the oil wastes away. 11 Be troubled, you farmers! Cry in a loud voice, you who take care of the vines! Cry for the wheat and the barley, because what was gathered from the field is destroyed. 12 The vine dries up and the fig tree wastes away. The pomegranate, the palm, the apple tree, and all the trees of the field dry up. And the people’s joy dries up.

13 Dress in cloth made from hair, and cry in sorrow, you religious leaders! Cry in a loud voice, you who serve at the altar! Come, spend the night in cloth made from hair, you who serve my God. For the grain gifts and drink gifts are kept from the house of your God. 14 Set apart a time when no food will be eaten. Call together a holy meeting. Gather the leaders and all the people of the land to the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord. 15 What a bad day it will be! The day of the Lord is near, when the All-powerful God will come to destroy. 16 Do you see how our food has been taken from us? Has not happiness and joy been cut off from the house of our God? 17 The seeds dry up under the ground. The store-houses are laid waste. The buildings where the grain was kept are torn down, for the grain is destroyed. 18 How the animals cry inside themselves! The cattle go from place to place because there is no food for them. Even the flocks of sheep suffer. 19 I cry to You, O Lord. For fire has destroyed the fields of the desert. All the trees of the field have burned up. 20 Even the animals of the field cry to You. For the rivers are dried up, and fire has burned up the fields of the desert.

2 Timothy 3:1-9

Things That Will Happen in the Last Days

You must understand that in the last days there will come times of much trouble. People will love themselves and money. They will have pride and tell of all the things they have done. They will speak against God. Children and young people will not obey their parents. People will not be thankful and they will not be holy. They will not love each other. No one can get along with them. They will tell lies about others. They will not be able to keep from doing things they know they should not do. They will be wild and want to beat and hurt those who are good. They will not stay true to their friends. They will act without thinking. They will think too much of themselves. They will love fun instead of loving God. They will do things to make it look as if they are Christians. But they will not receive the power that is for a Christian. Keep away from such people.

These are the kind of people who go from house to house. They talk to foolish women who are loaded down with sins and all kinds of sinful desires. Such women are always listening to new teaching. But they are never able to understand the truth. Jannes and Jambres fought against Moses. So do these teachers fight against the truth today. Their minds think only of sinful things. They have turned against the Christian teaching. They will not get very far. Their foolish teaching will be seen by everyone. That was the way it was with the two who worked against Moses.
