Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
מ (Mem)
97 O how I love your law!
All day long I meditate on it.
98 Your commandments[a] make me wiser than my enemies,
for I am always aware of them.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your rules.
100 I am more discerning than those older than I,
for I observe your precepts.
101 I stay away[b] from every evil path,
so that I might keep your instructions.[c]
102 I do not turn aside from your regulations,
for you teach me.
103 Your words are sweeter
in my mouth than honey![d]
104 Your precepts give me discernment.
Therefore I hate all deceitful actions.[e]
15 The Lord says:
“A sound is heard in Ramah,[a]
a sound of crying in bitter grief.
It is the sound of Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted, because her children are gone.”[b]
16 The Lord says to her,[c]
“Stop crying! Do not shed any more tears.[d]
For your heartfelt repentance[e] will be rewarded.
Your children will return from the land of the enemy.
I, the Lord, affirm it![f]
17 Indeed, there is hope for your posterity.[g]
Your children will return to their own territory.
I, the Lord, affirm it![h]
18 I have indeed[i] heard the people of Israel[j] say mournfully,
‘We were like a calf untrained to the yoke.[k]
You disciplined us and we learned from it.[l]
Let us come back to you and we will do so,[m]
for you are the Lord our God.
19 For after we turned away from you we repented.
After we came to our senses[n] we struck our thigh in sorrow.[o]
We are ashamed and humiliated
because of the disgraceful things we did previously.’[p]
20 Indeed, the people of Israel are my dear children.
They are the children I take delight in.[q]
For even though I must often rebuke them,
I still remember them with fondness.
So I am deeply moved with pity for them[r]
and will surely have compassion on them.
I, the Lord, affirm it![s]
21 I will say,[t] ‘My dear children of Israel,[u] keep in mind
the road you took when you were carried off.[v]
Mark off in your minds the landmarks.
Make a mental note of telltale signs marking the way back.
Return, my dear children of Israel.
Return to these cities of yours.
22 How long will you vacillate,[w]
you who were once like an unfaithful daughter?[x]
For I, the Lord, promise[y] to bring about something new[z] on the earth,
something as unique as a woman protecting a man!’”[aa]
Judah Will Be Restored
23 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel,[ab] says,
“I will restore the people of Judah to their land and to their towns.
When I do, they will again say[ac] of Jerusalem,[ad]
‘May the Lord bless you, you holy mountain,
the place where righteousness dwells.’[ae]
24 The land of Judah will be inhabited by people who live in its towns,
as well as by farmers and shepherds with their flocks.[af]
25 I will fully satisfy the needs of those who are weary
and fully refresh the souls of those who are faint.[ag]
26 Then they will say, ‘Under these conditions I can enjoy sweet sleep
when I wake up and look around.’[ah]
Healing Blind Bartimaeus
46 They came to Jericho. As Jesus[a] and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the road. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to shout,[b] “Jesus, Son of David,[c] have mercy[d] on me!” 48 Many scolded[e] him to get him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So[f] they called the blind man and said to him, “Have courage! Get up! He is calling you.” 50 He threw off his cloak, jumped up, and came to Jesus. 51 Then[g] Jesus said to him,[h] “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied, “Rabbi,[i] let me see again.”[j] 52 Jesus said to him, “Go, your faith has healed you.” Immediately he regained[k] his sight and followed him on the road.
