Psalm 102:1-17

Psalm 102[a]

The prayer of an oppressed man, as he grows faint and pours out his lament before the Lord.

102 O Lord, hear my prayer.
Pay attention to my cry for help.[b]
Do not ignore me in my time of trouble.[c]
Listen to me.[d]
When I call out to you, quickly answer me.
For my days go up in smoke,[e]
and my bones are charred as in a fireplace.[f]
My heart is parched[g] and withered like grass,
for I am unable[h] to eat food.[i]
Because of the anxiety that makes me groan,
my bones protrude from my skin.[j]
I am like an owl[k] in the wilderness;
I am like a screech owl[l] among the ruins.[m]
I stay awake;[n]
I am like a solitary bird on a roof.
All day long my enemies taunt me;
those who mock me use my name in their curses.[o]
For I eat ashes as if they were bread,[p]
and mix my drink with my tears,[q]
10 because of your anger and raging fury.
Indeed,[r] you pick me up and throw me away.
11 My days are coming to an end,[s]
and I am withered like grass.
12 But you, O Lord, rule forever,[t]
and your reputation endures.[u]
13 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion.[v]
For it is time to have mercy on her,
for the appointed time has come.
14 Indeed,[w] your servants take delight in her stones,
and feel compassion for[x] the dust of her ruins.[y]
15 The nations will respect the reputation of the Lord,[z]
and all the kings of the earth will respect[aa] his splendor,
16 when the Lord rebuilds Zion,
and reveals his splendor,
17 when he responds to the prayer of the destitute,[ab]
and does not reject[ac] their request.[ad]

Jeremiah 25:15-32

Judah and the Nations Will Experience God’s Wrath

15 So[a] the Lord, the God of Israel, spoke to me in a vision:[b] “Take this cup from my hand. It is filled with the wine of my wrath.[c] Take it and make the nations to whom I send you drink it. 16 When they have drunk it, they will stagger to and fro[d] and act insane. For I will send wars sweeping through them.”[e]

17 So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand. I made all the nations to whom he sent me drink the wine of his wrath.[f] 18 I made Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and its officials drink it.[g] I did it so Judah would become a ruin. I did it so Judah, its kings, and its officials would become an object of[h] horror and of hissing scorn, an example used in curses.[i] Such is already becoming the case![j] 19 I made all these other people drink it: Pharaoh, king of Egypt;[k] his attendants, his officials, his people, 20 the foreigners living in Egypt;[l] all the kings of the land of Uz;[m] all the kings of the land of the Philistines,[n] the people of Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, the people who had been left alive from Ashdod;[o] 21 all the people of Edom,[p] Moab,[q] Ammon;[r] 22 all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon;[s] all the kings of the coastlands along the sea;[t] 23 the people of Dedan, Tema, Buz,[u] all the desert people who cut their hair short at the temples;[v] 24 all the kings of Arabia who[w] live in the desert; 25 all the kings of Zimri;[x] all the kings of Elam;[y] all the kings of Media;[z] 26 all the kings of the north, whether near or far from one another; and all the other kingdoms that are on the face of the earth. After all of them have drunk the wine of the Lord’s wrath,[aa] the king of Babylon[ab] must drink it.

27 Then the Lord said to me,[ac] “Tell them that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel,[ad] says,[ae] ‘Drink this cup[af] until you get drunk and vomit. Drink until you fall down and can’t get up.[ag] For I will send wars sweeping through you.’[ah] 28 If they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink it, tell them that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says,[ai] ‘You most certainly must drink it![aj] 29 For take note, I am already beginning to bring disaster on the city that I call my own.[ak] So how can you possibly avoid being punished?[al] You will not go unpunished. For I am proclaiming war against all who live on the earth. I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,[am] affirm it!’[an]

30 “Then, Jeremiah,[ao] make the following prophecy[ap] against them:

‘Like a lion about to attack,[aq] the Lord will roar from the heights of heaven;
from his holy dwelling on high he will roar loudly.
He will roar mightily against his land.[ar]
He will shout in triumph, like those stomping juice from the grapes,[as]
against all those who live on the earth.
31 The sounds of battle[at] will resound to the ends of the earth.
For the Lord will bring charges against the nations.[au]
He will pass judgment on all humankind
and will hand the wicked over to be killed in war.’[av]
The Lord so affirms it![aw]
32 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies says,
‘Disaster will soon come on one nation after another.[ax]
A mighty storm of military destruction[ay] is rising up
from the distant parts of the earth.’

Matthew 10:5-15

Jesus sent out these twelve, instructing them as follows:[a] “Do not go on a road that leads to Gentile regions[b] and do not enter any Samaritan town.[c] Go[d] instead to the lost sheep[e] of the house of Israel. As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near!’ Heal the sick, raise the dead,[f] cleanse lepers,[g] cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. Do not take gold, silver, or copper[h] in your belts, 10 no bag[i] for the journey, or an extra tunic,[j] or sandals or staff,[k] for the worker deserves his provisions. 11 Whenever[l] you enter a town or village,[m] find out who is worthy there[n] and stay with them[o] until you leave. 12 As you enter the house, greet those within it.[p] 13 And if the house is worthy, let your peace come on it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.[q] 14 And if anyone will not welcome you or listen to your message, shake the dust off[r] your feet as you leave that house or that town. 15 I tell you the truth,[s] it will be more bearable for the region of Sodom and Gomorrah[t] on the day of judgment than for that town!
