Good News Translation (GNT)
Version
Psalm 106:40-48

40 (A)So the Lord was angry with his people;
    he was disgusted with them.
41 He abandoned them to the power of the heathen,
    and their enemies ruled over them.
42 They were oppressed by their enemies
    and were in complete subjection to them.
43 Many times the Lord rescued his people,
    but they chose to rebel against him
    and sank deeper into sin.
44 Yet the Lord heard them when they cried out,
    and he took notice of their distress.
45 For their sake he remembered his covenant,
    and because of his great love he relented.
46 He made all their oppressors
    feel sorry for them.

47 (B)Save us, O Lord our God,
    and bring us back from among the nations,
so that we may be thankful
    and praise your holy name.

48 Praise the Lord, the God of Israel;
    praise him now and forever!
    Let everyone say, “Amen!”

Praise the Lord!

Jeremiah 10:1-16

Idolatry and True Worship

10 People of Israel, listen to the message that the Lord has for you. He says,

“Do not follow the ways of other nations;
    do not be disturbed by unusual sights in the sky,
    even though other nations are terrified.
The religion of these people is worthless.
A tree is cut down in the forest;
    it is carved by the tools of the woodworker
    and decorated with silver and gold.
It is fastened down with nails
    to keep it from falling over.
Such idols are like scarecrows in a field of melons;
    they cannot speak;
they have to be carried
    because they cannot walk.
Do not be afraid of them:
    they can cause you no harm,
    and they can do you no good.”

Lord, there is no one like you;
    you are mighty,
    and your name is great and powerful.
(A)Who would not honor you, the king of all nations?
    You deserve to be honored.
There is no one like you
    among all the wise men of the nations
    or among any of their kings.
All of them are stupid and foolish.
    What can they learn from wooden idols?[a]
Their idols are covered with silver from Spain
    and with gold from Uphaz,
    all the work of artists;
they are dressed in violet and purple cloth
    woven by skilled weavers.
10 But you, Lord, are the true God,
    you are the living God
    and the eternal king.
When you are angry, the world trembles;
    the nations cannot endure your anger.

(11 You people must tell them that the gods who did not make the earth and the sky will be destroyed. They will no longer exist anywhere on earth.)

A Hymn of Praise to God

12 The Lord made the earth by his power;
    by his wisdom he created the world
    and stretched out the heavens.
13 At his command the waters above the sky[b] roar;
    he brings clouds from the ends of the earth.
He makes lightning flash in the rain
    and sends the wind from his storeroom.
14 At the sight of this, people feel stupid and senseless;
    those who make idols are disillusioned,
    because the gods they make are false and lifeless.
15 They are worthless and should be despised;
    they will be destroyed when the Lord comes to deal with them.
16 The God of Jacob is not like them;
    he is the one who made everything,
    and he has chosen Israel to be his very own people.
    The Lord Almighty is his name.

1 Corinthians 9:19-23

19 I am a free man, nobody's slave; but I make myself everybody's slave in order to win as many people as possible. 20 While working with the Jews, I live like a Jew in order to win them; and even though I myself am not subject to the Law of Moses, I live as though I were when working with those who are, in order to win them. 21 In the same way, when working with Gentiles, I live like a Gentile, outside the Jewish Law, in order to win Gentiles. This does not mean that I don't obey God's law; I am really under Christ's law. 22 Among the weak in faith I become weak like one of them, in order to win them. So I become all things to all people, that I may save some of them by whatever means are possible.

23 All this I do for the gospel's sake, in order to share in its blessings.
