Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Prayer for God to Destroy the Sinful
10 Why do You stand far away, O Lord? Why do You hide Yourself in times of trouble? 2 The sinful, in their pride, try to catch the weak. Let them be caught in the plans they have made. 3 The sinful man is proud of the desires of his heart. He praises those who want everything but he speaks against the Lord. 4 The sinful man in his pride does not look for God. All his thoughts are that there is no God. 5 His ways always go well for him. Your laws are too high for him to see. He laughs at those who hate him. 6 He says to himself, “I will not be moved. For all time, I will never have trouble.” 7 With his mouth he swears and lies. He makes it hard for other people. Trouble and sin are under his tongue. 8 He lies hidden in the towns, waiting to kill those who are not guilty. His eyes are always watching for the weak. 9 He lies in wait like a hidden lion. He lies in wait to catch the weak, and they become caught in his net. 10 The weak are hurt and they fall. They cannot stand under his strength. 11 He says to himself, “God has forgotten. He has hidden His face and will never see it.”
12 Rise up, O Lord! Lift up Your hand, O God. Do not forget the weak. 13 Why does the sinful man turn away from God? He has said to himself, “You will not ask it of me.” 14 But You have seen it. You look upon trouble and suffering, to take it into Your hands. The suffering man gives himself to You. You are the Helper of the one who has no father. 15 Break the arm of the bad and sinful man. Find out all his sins until You find no more. 16 The Lord is King forever and ever. Those who worship false gods will be taken from the land.
17 O Lord, You have heard the prayers of those who have no pride. You will give strength to their heart, and You will listen to them. 18 In this way, You will do the right thing for those without a father and those who suffer, so that man who is of the earth will no longer make them afraid.
Israel Does Not Obey
16 “As for you, do not pray for these people. Do not lift up a cry or prayer for them. Do not speak with Me about them, for I do not hear you. 17 Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 The children gather wood. The fathers make the fire. And the women make bread and cakes for the queen of heaven. They pour out drink gifts to other gods to make Me angry. 19 Do they make Me angry?” says the Lord. “Is it not themselves they hurt, to their own shame?” 20 So the Lord God says, “See, My anger will be poured out on this place, on man and animal, on the trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground. It will burn and not be stopped.”
21 The Lord of All, the God of Israel, says, “Add your burnt gifts to the animals you kill on the altar, and eat the flesh. 22 For when I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to them or tell them what to do about burnt gifts and animals killed on the altar. 23 But I did tell them, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people. Walk in all the way that I tell you, that it may be well with you.’ 24 Yet they did not obey or listen, but walked in the way they wanted to and in the strong-will of their sinful heart. They only stepped back and did not go on. 25 Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have sent you all My servants who speak for Me. I have risen up early and sent them day after day. 26 Yet they did not listen to Me or turn their ear to Me, but made their neck hard. They sinned more than their fathers.
Words to the Church in Philadelphia
7 “Write this to the angel of the church in the city of Philadelphia: ‘He Who is holy and true, Who holds the key of David, Who opens and no man can shut, Who shuts and no man can open, says this: 8 I know what you are doing. See! You do not have much power, but you have obeyed My Word. You have not turned against Me. So I have given you an open door that no man can shut. 9 See! There are some who belong to Satan. They say they are Jews, but they are not. They are liars. See! I will make them come to you and get down at your feet. Then they will know that I love you. 10 I will keep you from the time of trouble. The time to test everyone is about to come to the whole world. I will do this because you have listened to Me and have waited long and have not given up. 11 I am coming very soon. Hold on to what you have so no one can take your crown. 12 I will make the one who has power and wins an important part that holds up the house of God. He will never leave it again. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God. It is the new Jerusalem. The new Jerusalem will come down from My God out of heaven. I will write My new name on him. 13 You have ears! Then listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.’
