Psalm 74

A Prayer for the Nation

74 O God, why have You turned away from us forever? Why does Your anger burn against the sheep in Your fields? Remember Your people that You bought a long time ago. You made them free to be the family of Your promise, and Mount Zion, where You have lived. Turn Your steps toward this place that has been destroyed forever. Those who hate You have destroyed all that is in the holy place. Those who hate You have called out in the center of Your meeting place. They have set up their flags to show that they have won. They acted like men taking up axes against a group of trees. All of its fine work has been broken with axes and sticks. They have burned Your holy place to the dust. They have made dirty the house of Your name. They said in their hearts, “Let us destroy all of these places!” They have burned all the meeting places where God was worshiped in the land. We do not see any special things happening. There is no longer anyone who speaks for God. And none of us knows how long this will be. 10 O God, how long will those who hate You laugh at the truth? Will they speak against Your name forever? 11 Why do You take Your hand away, even Your right hand? Put it out and destroy them!

12 God is still my King from long ago. He does saving works upon the earth. 13 You divided the sea by Your power. You broke the heads of the large dragons in the waters. 14 You crushed the heads of the Leviathan. And You fed him to the animals of the desert. 15 It was You Who opened up the earth for water to flow out. And You dried up rivers that flow forever. 16 The day is Yours. And the night is Yours. You have set the light and the sun in their places. 17 You have divided all the lands and seas and nations of the earth. You have made summer and winter.

18 Remember how those who hate You have laughed at the truth, O Lord. Foolish people have spoken against Your name. 19 Do not give the life of Your dove over to the wild animal. Do not forget the lives of Your troubled people forever. 20 Think about Your agreement. For the dark places of the land are full of fighting. 21 Do not let those who suffer under a bad power return without honor. Let those who suffer and those who are in need praise Your name.

22 Rise up, O God. Stand up for Your rights. Remember how the foolish man speaks against You all day long. 23 Do not forget the voice of those who hate You, the noise that comes without stopping from those who rise against You.

Isaiah 5:24-30

24 So, as fire destroys what is left of the cut grain and dry grass falls into the fire, so their root will waste away and their flower blow away like dust. For they have turned away from the Law of the Lord of All. They have hated the Word of the Holy One of Israel. 25 Because of this the anger of the Lord has burned against His people. He has put out His hand against them and destroyed them. The mountains shook. Their dead bodies lay like waste in the center of the streets. For all this His anger is not turned away but His hand is still put out.

26 He will raise up flags as a sign to the nations far away. He will call for them from the ends of the earth, and they will hurry to come. 27 Not one of them is tired or falls. No one sleeps. Not a belt is loosened at the waist, or a shoe string broken. 28 Their arrows are sharp, and their bows are ready. The feet of their horses are like hard stone. And the wheels of their war-wagons are like a strong-wind. 29 Their noise is like that of a female lion. They sound like young lions. They make an angry noise as they take their food, and carry it away where no one can take it from them. 30 In that day they will make an angry noise over it like the noise of the sea. If one looks to the land, he will see darkness and trouble. Even the light is made dark by its clouds.

Acts 7:44-53

The Place of Worship and the House of God

44 “Our early fathers had the tent to worship in. They used it in the desert. God told Moses to make it like the plan which he had seen. 45 This was received by our early fathers. They brought it here when they won the wars with the people who were not Jews. It was when Joshua was our leader. God made those people leave as our early fathers took the land. The tent was here until the time of David. 46 David pleased God and wanted to build a house for worship for the God of Jacob. 47 But Solomon was the one who built the house of God for Him. 48 But the Most High does not live in buildings made by hands. The early preacher said, 49 ’Heaven is the place where I sit and the earth is the place where I rest My feet. What house will you build Me?’ says the Lord. ‘Or what is My place of rest? 50 Did not My hands make all these things?’ (A)

The Jews Are Hurt

51 “You have hard hearts and ears that will not listen to me! You are always working against the Holy Spirit. Your early fathers did. You do too. 52 Which of the early preachers was not beaten and hurt by your early fathers? They killed those who told of the coming of the One Right with God. Now you have handed Him over and killed Him. 53 You had the Law given to you by angels. Yet you have not kept it.”
