Psalm 52

For the director of music. A maskil of David when Doeg, who was from Edom, had gone to Saul. Doeg had told Saul, “David has gone to the house of Ahimelek.”

52 You think you are such a big, strong man!
Why do you brag about the evil things you’ve done?
You are a dishonor to God all the time.
You plan ways to destroy others.
Your tongue is like a blade that has a sharp edge.
    You are always telling lies.
You love evil instead of good.
You would rather lie than tell the truth.
You love to harm others with your words, you liar!

So God will destroy you forever.
He will grab you and pluck you from your tent.
He will remove you from this life.
Those who do what is right will see it and learn a lesson from it.
They will laugh at you and say,
“Just look at this fellow!
He didn’t depend on God for his safety.
He put his trust in all his wealth.
He grew strong by destroying others!”

But I am like a healthy olive tree.
My roots are deep in the house of God.
I trust in your faithful love
    for ever and ever.
I will praise you forever for what you have done.
I will praise you when I’m with your faithful people.
I will put my hope in you because you are good.

Amos 5:10-17

10 There are people among you who hate anyone who stands for justice in court.
They hate those who tell the truth.

11 You make poor people pay tax on their straw.
    You also tax their grain.
So, even though you have built stone houses,
    you won’t live in them.
You have planted fruitful vineyards.
But you won’t drink the wine they produce.
12 I know how many crimes you have committed.
You have sinned far too much.

Among you are people who crush those who have done no wrong.
They accept money from people who want special favors.
They take away the rights of poor people in the courts.
13 So those who are wise keep quiet in times like these.
That’s because the times are evil.

14 Look to what is good, not to what is evil.
    Then you will live.
And the Lord God who rules over all
    will be with you,
just as you say he is.
15 Hate evil and love good.
Do what is fair in the courts.
Perhaps the Lord God who rules over all
    will have mercy on you.
After all, you are the only ones left
in the family line of Joseph.

16 The Lord God rules over all. The Lord says,

“People will weep in all the streets.
They will be very sad in every market place.
Even farmers will be told to cry loudly.
People will mourn for the dead.
17 Workers will cry in all the vineyards.
That’s because I will punish you,”
    says the Lord.

Hebrews 5:1-6

Every high priest is chosen from among the people. He is appointed to act for the people. He acts for them in whatever has to do with God. He offers gifts and sacrifices for their sins. Some people have gone astray without knowing it. He is able to deal gently with them. He can do that because he himself is weak. That’s why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins. He must also do it for the sins of the people. And no one can take this honor for himself. Instead, he receives it when he is appointed by God. That is just how it was for Aaron.

It was the same for Christ. He did not take for himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him,

“You are my Son.
Today I have become your Father.” (Psalm 2:7)

In another place God said,

“You are a priest forever,
    just like Melchizedek.” (Psalm 110:4)
