2 Kings 5:1-14

Chapter 5

Elisha Cures Naaman’s Leprosy. Naaman, the army commander of the king of Aram, was highly esteemed and respected by his master, for through him the Lord had brought victory to Aram. But valiant as he was, the man was a leper.[a] Now the Arameans had captured from the land of Israel in a raid a little girl, who became the servant of Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, “If only my master would present himself to the prophet in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.”

Naaman went and told his master, “This is what the girl from the land of Israel said.” The king of Aram said, “Go. I will send along a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman set out, taking along ten silver talents, six thousand gold pieces, and ten festal garments.

He brought the king of Israel the letter, which read: “With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you, that you may cure him of his leprosy.” When he read the letter, the king of Israel tore his garments and exclaimed: “Am I a god with power over life and death, that this man should send someone for me to cure him of leprosy? Take note! You can see he is only looking for a quarrel with me!”(A) When Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his garments, he sent word to the king: “Why have you torn your garments? Let him come to me and find out that there is a prophet in Israel.”

Naaman came with his horses and chariot and stopped at the door of Elisha’s house. 10 Elisha sent him the message: “Go and wash seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will heal, and you will be clean.”(B) 11 But Naaman went away angry, saying, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand there to call on the name of the Lord his God, and would move his hand over the place, and thus cure the leprous spot. 12 Are not the rivers of Damascus, the Abana and the Pharpar, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be cleansed?”[b] With this, he turned about in anger and left.

13 But his servants came up and reasoned with him: “My father, if the prophet told you to do something extraordinary, would you not do it? All the more since he told you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” 14 So Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times, according to the word of the man of God. His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.(C)

I

I praise you, Lord, for you raised me up
    and did not let my enemies rejoice over me.
O Lord, my God,
    I cried out to you for help and you healed[c] me.
Lord, you brought my soul up from Sheol;
    you let me live, from going down to the pit.[d](A)

II

Sing praise to the Lord, you faithful;
    give thanks to his holy memory.
For his anger lasts but a moment;
    his favor a lifetime.
At dusk weeping comes for the night;
    but at dawn there is rejoicing.

III

Complacent,[e] I once said,
    “I shall never be shaken.”
Lord, you showed me favor,
    established for me mountains of virtue.
But when you hid your face
    I was struck with terror.(B)
To you, Lord, I cried out;
    with the Lord I pleaded for mercy:
10 [f]“What gain is there from my lifeblood,
    from my going down to the grave?
Does dust give you thanks
    or declare your faithfulness?
11 Hear, O Lord, have mercy on me;
    Lord, be my helper.”

12 You changed my mourning into dancing;
    you took off my sackcloth
    and clothed me with gladness.(C)
13 So that my glory may praise you
    and not be silent.

    forever will I give you thanks.

Galatians 6:1-6

Chapter 6

Life in the Community of Christ.[a] Brothers, even if a person is caught in some transgression, you who are spiritual should correct that one in a gentle spirit, looking to yourself, so that you also may not be tempted.(A) Bear one another’s burdens,(B) and so you will fulfill the law of Christ.[b] (C)For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he is deluding himself. [c]Each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason to boast with regard to himself alone, and not with regard to someone else; for each will bear his own load.(D)

(E)One who is being instructed in the word should share all good things with his instructor.[d]

Galatians 6:7-16

Make no mistake: God is not mocked, for a person will reap only what he sows, because the one who sows for his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows for the spirit will reap eternal life from the spirit.(A) Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up.(B) 10 So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all,(C) but especially to those who belong to the family of the faith.[a]

VI. Conclusion

Final Appeal.[b] 11 See with what large letters[c] I am writing to you in my own hand!(D) 12 [d]It is those who want to make a good appearance in the flesh who are trying to compel you to have yourselves circumcised, only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.(E) 13 Not even those having themselves circumcised[e] observe the law themselves; they only want you to be circumcised so that they may boast of your flesh. 14 But may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which[f] the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.(F) 15 For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does uncircumcision,(G) but only a new creation.[g] 16 Peace and mercy be to all who follow this rule[h] and to the Israel of God.(H)

Luke 10:1-11

Chapter 10

The Mission of the Seventy-two.[a] After this the Lord appointed seventy[-two][b] others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit.(A) He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.(B) Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.(C) [c]Carry no money bag,(D) no sack, no sandals;(E) and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’[d] If a peaceful person[e] lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another.(F) Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you,(G) cure the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you.’(H) 10 Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say,(I) 11 ‘The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.’ Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand.(J)

Luke 10:16-20

16 Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”(A)

Return of the Seventy-two. 17 The seventy[-two] returned rejoicing, and said, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name.” 18 Jesus said, “I have observed Satan fall like lightning[a] from the sky.(B) 19 Behold, I have given you the power ‘to tread upon serpents’ and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you.(C) 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”(D)
