Psalm 75

God Judges the Wicked

For the choir director: “Do Not Destroy.” A psalm of Asaph.(A) A song.

We give thanks to you, God;
we give thanks to you, for your name is near.(B)
People tell about your wondrous works.(C)

“When I choose a time,
I will judge fairly.(D)
When the earth and all its inhabitants shake,
I am the one who steadies its pillars.(E)Selah
I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn.(F)
Do not lift up your horn against heaven[a]
or speak arrogantly.’”(G)

Exaltation does not come
from the east, the west, or the desert,
for God is the Judge:
He brings down one and exalts another.(H)
For there is a cup in the Lord’s hand,
full of wine blended with spices, and he pours from it.
All the wicked of the earth will drink,
draining it to the dregs.(I)

As for me, I will tell about him forever;
I will sing praise to the God of Jacob.(J)

10 “I will cut off all the horns of the wicked,(K)
but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”(L)

2 Kings 4:1-7

The Widow’s Oil Multiplied

One of the wives of the sons of the prophets(A) cried out to Elisha, “Your servant, my husband, has died. You know that your servant feared the Lord.(B) Now the creditor is coming to take my two children as his slaves.”(C)

Elisha asked her, “What can I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?”

She said, “Your servant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil.”(D)

Then he said, “Go out and borrow empty containers from all your neighbors. Do not get just a few.(E) Then go in and shut the door behind you and your sons, and pour oil into all these containers. Set the full ones to one side.” So she left.

After she had shut the door behind her and her sons, they kept bringing her containers, and she kept pouring.(F) When they were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another container.”

But he replied, “There aren’t any more.” Then the oil stopped.

She went and told the man of God,(G) and he said, “Go sell the oil and pay your debt; you and your sons can live on the rest.”(H)

Matthew 10:16-25

Persecutions Predicted

16 “Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves.(A) 17 Beware of them, because they will hand you over to local courts[a] and flog you in their synagogues.(B) 18 You will even be brought before governors and kings because of me, to bear witness to them and to the Gentiles.(C) 19 But when they hand you over, don’t worry about how or what you are to speak.(D) For you will be given what to say at that hour, 20 because it isn’t you speaking, but the Spirit(E) of your Father is speaking through you.(F)

21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.(G) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of my name.(H) But the one who endures to the end will be saved.(I) 23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to another.(J) For truly I tell you, you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. 24 A disciple[b] is not above his teacher, or a slave above his master.(K) 25 It is enough for a disciple to become like his teacher and a slave like his master. If they called the head of the house ‘Beelzebul,’ how much more the members of his household!(L)
