Confidence in God During National Distress
1 For the leader; According to Jeduthun. A psalm of Asaph.
I
2 I cry aloud to God,
I cry to God to hear me.
II
12 [b]I will recall the deeds of the Lord;
yes, recall your wonders of old.(B)
13 I will ponder all your works;
on your exploits I will meditate.
14 Your way, God, is holy;
what god is as great as our God?(C)
15 You are the God who does wonders;
among the peoples you have revealed your might.(D)
16 With your mighty arm you redeemed your people,
the children of Jacob and Joseph.(E)

17 The waters saw you, God;
the waters saw you and lashed about,
even the deeps of the sea[c] trembled.(F)
18 The clouds poured down their rains;
the thunderheads rumbled;
your arrows flashed back and forth.(G)
19 The thunder of your chariot wheels resounded;
your lightning lit up the world;
the earth trembled and quaked.(H)
20 Through the sea was your way;
your path, through the mighty waters,
though your footsteps were unseen.(I)
13 The king sent a third captain with his company of fifty men. When the third captain had climbed the hill, he fell to his knees before Elijah, pleading with him. He said, “Man of God, let my life and the lives of these fifty men, your servants, count for something in your sight! 14 Already fire has come down from heaven, consuming the first two captains with their companies of fifty men. But now, let my life count for something in your sight!” 15 Then the messenger of the Lord said to Elijah: Go down with him; you need not be afraid of him. So Elijah left and went down with him to the king. 16 He declared to the king: “Thus says the Lord: Because you sent messengers to inquire of Baalzebub, the god of Ekron—do you think there is no God in Israel to inquire of?—you shall not leave the bed upon which you lie; instead you shall die.”(A)
17 Ahaziah died according to the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah. Since he had no son, Joram[a] succeeded him as king, in the second year of Joram, son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah.
18 The rest of the acts of Ahaziah, which he did, are recorded in the book of chronicles of the kings of Israel.
3 The guild prophets who were in Bethel went out to Elisha and asked him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take your master from you?” He replied, “Yes, I know that. Be still.”
4 Elijah said to him, “Elisha, stay here, please. The Lord has sent me on to Jericho.” Elisha replied, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. 5 The guild prophets who were in Jericho approached Elisha and asked him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take your master from you?” He replied, “Yes, I know that. Be still.”
21 He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.
The First Prediction of the Passion. 22 He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.”(A)
The Conditions of Discipleship.(B) 23 Then he said to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily[a] and follow me.(C) 24 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.(D) 25 What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.(E) 27 Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”
