Psalm 77:1-2

Psalm 77

Confidence in a Time of Crisis

For the choir director: according to Jeduthun. Of Asaph.(A) A psalm.

I cry aloud to God,
aloud to God, and he will hear me.(B)
I sought the Lord in my day of trouble.
My hands were continually lifted up
all night long;
I refused to be comforted.(C)

Psalm 77:11-20

11 I will remember the Lord’s works;
yes, I will remember your ancient wonders.(A)
12 I will reflect on all you have done
and meditate on your actions.(B)

13 God, your way is holy.
What god is great like God?(C)
14 You are the God who works wonders;
you revealed your strength among the peoples.(D)
15 With power you redeemed your people,
the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.(E)Selah

16 The water saw you, God.
The water saw you; it trembled.
Even the depths shook.(F)
17 The clouds poured down water.
The storm clouds thundered;
your arrows flashed back and forth.(G)
18 The sound of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
lightning lit up the world.(H)
The earth shook and quaked.(I)
19 Your way went through the sea
and your path through the vast water,
but your footprints were unseen.(J)
20 You led your people like a flock(K)
by the hand of Moses and Aaron.(L)

2 Kings 1:13-18

13 Then the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. The third captain went up and fell on his knees in front of Elijah and begged him, “Man of God,(A) please let my life and the lives of these fifty servants of yours be precious to you.(B) 14 Already fire has come down from heaven and consumed the first two captains with their companies, but this time let my life be precious to you.”

15 The angel of the Lord(C) said to Elijah, “Go down with him. Don’t be afraid of him.”(D) So he got up and went down with him to the king.

16 Then Elijah said to King Ahaziah, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron—is it because there is no God in Israel for you to inquire of his will?—you will not get up from your sickbed; you will certainly die.’”

17 Ahaziah died according to the word of the Lord that Elijah had spoken. Since he had no son, Joram[a](E) became king in his place. This happened in the second year of Judah’s King Jehoram(F) son of Jehoshaphat.[b] 18 The rest of the events of Ahaziah’s reign, along with his accomplishments, are written in the Historical Record of Israel’s Kings.[c](G)

2 Kings 2:3-5

Then the sons of the prophets(A) who were at Bethel came out to Elisha and said, “Do you know that the Lord will take your master away from you today?” (B)

He said, “Yes, I know. Be quiet.”

Elijah said to him, “Elisha, stay here; the Lord is sending me to Jericho.”(C)

But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went to Jericho.

Then the sons of the prophets who were in Jericho came up to Elisha and said, “Do you know that the Lord will take your master away from you today?”

He said, “Yes, I know. Be quiet.”

Luke 9:21-27

His Death and Resurrection Predicted

21 But he strictly warned and instructed them to tell this to no one,(A) 22 saying,(B) “It is necessary that the Son of Man(C) suffer many things(D) and be rejected(E) by the elders, chief priests, and scribes,(F) be killed, and be raised the third day.”(G)

Take Up Your Cross

23 Then he said to them all, “If anyone wants to follow after[a] me, let him deny himself,(H) take up his cross daily,[b] and follow me.(I) 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will save it.(J) 25 For what does it benefit someone if he gains the whole world, and yet loses or forfeits himself?(K) 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and my words,(L) the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory(M) and that of the Father and the holy angels.(N) 27 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death(O) until they see the kingdom of God.”(P)
