Psalm 97

The Lord Brings Justice

The Lord is King!
Tell the earth to celebrate
    and all islands to shout.
Dark clouds surround him,
and his throne is supported
    by justice and fairness.
Fire leaps from his throne,
    destroying his enemies,
and his lightning is so bright
that the earth sees it
    and trembles.
Mountains melt away like wax
in the presence of the Lord
    of all the earth.

The heavens announce,
“The Lord brings justice!”
    Everyone sees God's glory.
Those who brag about
the useless idols they worship
    are terribly ashamed,
and all the false gods
    bow down to the Lord.

When the people of Zion
and of the towns of Judah
hear that God brings justice,
    they will celebrate.
The Lord rules the whole earth,
and he is more glorious
    than all the false gods.

10 Love the Lord
    and hate evil!
God protects his loyal people
and rescues them
    from violence.
11 If you obey and do right,
a light will show you the way
    and fill you with happiness.
12 You are the Lord's people!
So celebrate and praise
    the only God.

Exodus 33:18-23

18 Then Moses said, “I pray that you will let me see you in all of your glory.”

19 (A) The Lord answered:

All right. I am the Lord, and I show mercy and kindness to anyone I choose. I will let you see my glory and hear my holy name, 20 but I won't let you see my face, because anyone who sees my face will die. 21 There is a rock not far from me. Stand beside it, 22 and before I pass by in all of my shining glory, I will put you in a large crack in the rock. I will cover your eyes with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take my hand away, and you will see my back. You will not see my face.

John 1:14-18

14 The Word became
a human being
    and lived here with us.
We saw his true glory,
the glory of the only Son
    of the Father.
From him the complete gifts
of undeserved grace and truth
    have come down to us.

15 John spoke about him and shouted, “This is the one I told you would come! He is greater than I am, because he was alive before I was born.”

16 Because of all that the Son is, we have been given one blessing after another.[a] 17 The Law was given by Moses, but Jesus Christ brought us undeserved kindness and truth. 18 No one has ever seen God. The only Son, who is truly God and is closest to the Father, has shown us what God is like.
