Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
A Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem
122 I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” 2 Our feet are standing inside your gates, O Jerusalem. 3 Jerusalem is built as a city where people come together. 4 That is where the different families go, the families of the Lord. There they give thanks to the name of the Lord, by the Law that was given to Israel. 5 For thrones were set there for telling who is guilty or not, the thrones of the house of David.
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. May all go well for those who love you. 7 May there be peace within your walls. May all go well within your houses. 8 I will now say, “May peace be within you,” for the good of my brothers and my friends. 9 Because of the house of the Lord our God, I will pray for your good.
Haman Is Put to Death
7 So the king and Haman came to eat with Esther the queen. 2 And the king said again to Esther on the second day, as they drank their wine at the special supper, “What do you want to ask of me, Queen Esther? It will be done for you. What do you want? You would be given as much as half the nation.” 3 Queen Esther answered, “If I have found favor in your eyes, O king, and if it please the king, I ask that my life and the lives of my people be saved. 4 For I and my people have been sold, to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be done away with. If we had only been sold as men and women servants, I would have kept quiet. For our trouble is not to be compared with the trouble it will make for the king.” 5 Then King Ahasuerus asked Queen Esther, “Who is he, and where is he, who would do such a thing?” 6 Esther said, “This sinful Haman hates us very much!” Then Haman was very afraid in front of the king and queen. 7 The king got up from drinking the wine very angry, and went into his garden, but Haman stayed to beg for his life from Queen Esther. He knew that the king planned to punish him. 8 When the king returned from his garden to the place where they were drinking wine, Haman was falling on the bed-like seat where Esther was lying. Then the king said, “Will he even trouble the queen while I am in the house?” As the king spoke the words, they covered Haman’s face. 9 Then Harbonah, one of the king’s servants helping the king, said, “See, there is a tower made for hanging people at Haman’s house, thirteen times taller than a man. Haman had it made for hanging Mordecai who spoke good and helped the king!” And the king said, “Hang Haman on it.” 10 So they hanged Haman on the tower that he had made for Mordecai. Then the king’s anger became less.
What God Wanted to Show John of Christ
9 I, John, am your Christian brother. I have shared with you in suffering because of Jesus Christ. I have also shared with you His holy nation and we have not given up. I was put on the island called Patmos because I preached the Word of God and told about Jesus Christ. 10 I was under the Spirit’s power on the Lord’s Day when I heard a loud voice behind me like the loud sound of a horn. 11 It said, “(*I am the First and the Last.) Write in a book what you see and send it to the seven churches. They are in the cities of Ephesus and Smyrna and Pergamum and Thyatira and Sardis and Philadelphia and Laodicea.”
12 I turned around to see who was speaking to me. As I turned, I saw seven lights made of gold. 13 Among the lights stood One Who looked like the Son of Man. He had on a long coat that came to His feet. A belt of gold was around His chest. 14 His head and His hair were white like white wool. They were as white as snow. His eyes were like fire. 15 His feet were like shining brass as bright as if it were in a fire. His voice sounded like powerful rushing water. 16 He held seven stars in His right hand. A sharp sword that cuts both ways came out of His mouth. His face was shining as bright as the sun shines at noon. 17 When I saw Him, I fell down at His feet like a dead man. He laid His right hand on me and said, “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One. I was dead, but look, I am alive forever. I have power over death and hell. 19 So write the things you have seen and the things that are and the things that will happen later. 20 This is what the seven stars and the seven lights made of gold mean that you saw in My right hand. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches. The seven lights are the seven churches.
