Psalm 63

Psalm 63[a]

A psalm of David, written when he was in the Judean wilderness.[b]

63 O God, you are my God. I long for you.[c]
My soul thirsts[d] for you,
my flesh yearns for you,
in a dry and parched[e] land where there is no water.
Yes,[f] in the sanctuary I have seen you,[g]
and witnessed[h] your power and splendor.
Because[i] experiencing[j] your loyal love is better than life itself,
my lips will praise you.
For this reason[k] I will praise you while I live;
in your name I will lift up my hands.[l]
As with choice meat[m] you satisfy my soul.[n]
My mouth joyfully praises you,[o]
whenever[p] I remember you on my bed,
and think about you during the nighttime hours.
For you are my deliverer;[q]
under your wings[r] I rejoice.
My soul[s] pursues you;[t]
your right hand upholds me.
Enemies seek to destroy my life,[u]
but they will descend into the depths of the earth.[v]
10 Each one will be handed over to the sword;[w]
their corpses will be eaten by jackals.[x]
11 But the king[y] will rejoice in God;
everyone who takes oaths in his name[z] will boast,
for the mouths of those who speak lies will be shut up.[aa]

1 Samuel 17:55-18:5

55 [a] Now as Saul watched David going out to fight the Philistine, he asked Abner, the general in command of the army, “Whose son is that young man, Abner?” Abner replied, “As surely as you live, O king, I don’t know.” 56 The king said, “Find out whose son this boy is.”

57 So when David returned from striking down the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul. He still had the head of the Philistine in his hand. 58 Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” David replied, “I am the son of your servant Jesse in Bethlehem.”

Saul Comes to Fear David

18 When David[b] had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan and David became bound together in close friendship.[c] Jonathan loved David as much as he did his own life.[d] Saul retained David[e] on that day and did not allow him to return to his father’s house. Jonathan made a covenant with David, for he loved him as much as he did his own life.[f] Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with the rest of his gear including his sword, his bow, and even his belt.

On every mission on which Saul sent him, David achieved success. So Saul appointed him over the men of war. This pleased not only all the army, but also Saul’s servants.[g]

Revelation 11:15-19

The Seventh Trumpet

15 Then[a] the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven saying:

“The kingdom of the world
has become the kingdom of our Lord
and of his Christ,[b]
and he will reign for ever and ever.”

16 Then[c] the twenty-four elders who are seated on their thrones before God threw themselves down with their faces to the ground[d] and worshiped God 17 with these words:[e]

“We give you thanks, Lord God, the All-Powerful,[f]
the one who is and who was,
because you have taken your great power
and begun to reign.[g]
18 The[h] nations[i] were enraged,
but[j] your wrath has come,
and the time has come for the dead to be judged,
and the time has come to give to your servants,[k]
the prophets, their reward,
as well as to the saints
and to those who revere[l] your name, both small and great,
and the time has come[m] to destroy those who destroy[n] the earth.”

19 Then[o] the temple of God in heaven was opened and the ark of his covenant was visible within his temple. And there were flashes of lightning, roaring,[p] crashes of thunder, an earthquake, and a great hailstorm.[q]
